Career-Oriented Curriculum
The Moritz College of Law provides a career-oriented curriculum to its students. With combined offerings of doctrinal courses in major legal practice areas (such as corporate law, litigation, dispute resolution, labor and employment law, and intellectual property) and experiential learning courses (such as the Mediation Clinic, the Legislation Clinic, and the Public Interest Externship program, moot court competitions,) Moritz equips LLM candidates with essential lawyering skills and real-life work experience that meet the demand of the global legal market.
A flexible degree, LLM students at Moritz may design their own curriculum that best suits their career goals, either by selecting any courses from over 100 courses in all major areas of U.S., transnational and international law, or focusing on one of the six academic concentrations that focus on major legal practice areas in the global market.
LLM- JD Transfer
LLM students at Moritz has the option to transfer to the JD program upon completion of the LLM program. Most credits earned from the LLM degree are transferrable to the JD program. As a result, LLM-JD transfer students will complete the JD program only in two years. LSAT test is not required.
LLM Student Support
The academic year at Moritz is enriched through a wide range of resources and student support services available both at the College of Law and the Ohio State University, including one-on-one academic advising, career advising, mentoring program, mental health and wellness programs, Faculty Resource Advisors, and LLM-JD Buddy program. Our career and professional development programs help prepare LLM students for job search post-graduation during the OPT period (OPT - Optional Practical Training - allows F-1 visa students temporary employment of up to 12 months after graduation in law-related roles, working at least 20 hours a week or full time).
Our LLM attracts law students, mid-career lawyers, judges, prosecutors, and other legal professionals from around the world.
The Moritz Scholarship for Excellence offers a number of tuition scholarships of 50% or higher to outstanding LLM candidates. To be considered for this Scholarship, LLM applicants must be able to demonstrate strong academic aptitude, experiences that demonstrate leadership or engaged involvement, track record of professional accomplishments, scholarship and/or honors/awards, and commitment to contributing to the intellectual diversity and rigor of the Moritz law community. The LLM application, required application materials, and the scholarship essay must be submitted by Febraury 1 (for Fall semester).
The Moritz LLM Scholarships award LLM students with partial scholarships in varying amounts of up to 40% tuition. Awards are considered in light of the applicants' academic performance in law school and/or prior legal work experience. All applicants are automatically considered for a Moritz LLM Scholarship along with their LLM applications. No scholarship essay is required. The scholarship decision will be made concurrently with the admissions decision. Priority Date: To receive priority consideration for a Moritz LLM Scholarship, applicants should submit the complete LLM application along with required application materials by February 1 for Fall semester After these priority dates, awards will be determined in accordance with the availability of scholarship funds.
Degree Requirements
To earn an LLM degree at the Moritz College of Law, candidates must successfully complete a minimum of 24 credit hours, including 5 credit hours in the two required LLM courses: LLM Analysis, Research & Writing (2 credits) and US Legal Systems (3 credits).
Students typically complete the required minimum 24 credit hours in two semesters. If students are interested in completing the LLM degree during three semesters, they are required to complete at least 30 credit hours.
Curriculum
Except for a limited number of courses open only to JD students, the curriculum is flexible and allows LLM students to choose any courses that are regularly offered at the Moritz College of Law. Besides a few classes designed for LLM students only and a few courses that are open to JD students only, LLM students can take all first-year and upper-level JD courses, studying alongside JD students. This enhances the integration of LLM students within the College of Law and enriches the learning experience for both the LLM and JD students.
You may choose to pursue a general LLM degree and select any courses that suit their career goals or academic interests, or to concentrate in a specific academic area of their LLM studies. The curriculum also offers bar exam courses. Since LLM students are allowed to take between 8-15 credits each semester at the same tuition rate, you are not limited in course selections, and may be able to combine bar exam courses, specialized courses, and any other courses of their interests.
