Founded in 1987, the Department of Applied Physics (AP) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is committed to becoming a world-leading institution in the field of physics. In 2020, the Department was proud to be ranked No. 1 among universities in Hong Kong for the percentage of world-leading research, according to the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) by the University Grants Committee (UGC).

The Department of Applied Physics attract high-calibre scholars and researchers with diverse expertise, enriching the curriculum and driving scientific innovations. The Department has five highly cited researchers and 13 scientists recognized as the World’s Top 2% Most-cited Scientists by Stanford University.

The Department focuses on developing cutting-edge technologies, including new materials, renewable energy, catalysis, artificial intelligence, and optoelectronics. To prepare students for future challenges and to excel in the contemporary workplace, our programmes emphasise an application-based approach. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Physics with a Secondary Major in Artificial Intelligence & Data Analytics (AIDA) or Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IE), as well as a Master of Science in Microelectronics Technology & Materials and MPhil/PhD programs in Physics and Materials Science.

While The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is ranked 54 in the QS World University Rankings for 2026, our department holds a notable ranking of 72 in Materials Science and 28 in Materials Science by U.S. News and World Report, and 32 in Condensed Matter Physics.
