Why Study Strategy, Management, and Operations at The Busch School?
This area focuses on the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes required of leaders in a business. Strategy examines the structural forces that shape competition in a market and the various business models that an enterprise may implement to create value for its stakeholders. Management focuses on the allocation of resources and methods of decision-making within the enterprise to optimize value for stakeholders. Operations explores how processes, procedures, and systems interact within an enterprise to fulfill customer promises and secure value for stakeholders.

Operations Management
We teach students how people, processes, and systems interact in an enterprise to fulfill customer promises effectively and efficiently. Taught from the perspective of the General Manager, courses in this Specialization focus on many of the skills, tools, and methods used by the top Management Consulting firms around the world. Topics such as demand forecasting, inventory management, and quality control, to name just a few, are thoroughly examined. Students graduating with this Specialty are thoroughly prepared to design, manage, and improve business operations in a myriad of challenging environments.

Sports Management
Want to combine your love of sports with your passion for business? The Sports Management Specialization is your dream come true. Sports Management focuses on the sport and the team from a General Manager’s perspective. Areas of study include brand management, promotions, contracts, human resources, event planning, financing, and facilities management, to name just a few. Job opportunities in the field of Sports Management abound, such as athletic director, promotions manager, marketing consultant, event coordinator, facilities director, and negotiations manager. While great players make great teams, great Sports Managers build great franchises.

Technology Management
With technology becoming an increasingly central part of most businesses, this Specialization is ideal for a wide variety of students, from aspiring Big Data Managers to future Electronic Commerce Specialists. Arguably one of the highest demand Specializations in the business world today, Technology Management is all about using computers, networks, and systems to deliver high value to customers. We will explore Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems, Sales Force Automation (SFA) systems, Just-In-Time (JIT) Inventory Control Systems, and many more. The amazon.com business model will be explored front-to-back, from the web front stores to the backend distribution warehouses. Indeed, students graduating with this Specialization should expect to be of significant interest to the many high-tech companies in the DC area -- from Microsoft and IBM to Amazon and Oracle.

HR Management
This Specialization emphasizes the criticality of leading people in a common mission. The essential components of human motivation are thoroughly explored -- from psychological factors to material incentives. Various forms of organization are studied for their strengths and weaknesses. We also investigate rewards and punishments in the context of regular performance reviews. Many elements of Catholic intellectual tradition are included in this Specialization, such as Pope Leo’s famous encyclical Rerum Novarum on the nature and dignity of work. Students graduating with this Specialty enter the workforce prepared to be leaders of men and women united in the pursuit of a common good.

Not-for-Profit Management
The Not-for-Profit Management Specialization combines leadership theory and practices with fundamental information about the goals and operations of nonprofit organizations. While similar to for-profit businesses in many ways, nonprofits face a unique challenge: simultaneously meeting financial goals while achieving the positive community impact specified in the company charter. Nonprofits must constantly find charitable donors, retain existing ones, and update plans for the future. Areas of study in this Specialization include fundraising, public relations, organizational management, and ethical leadership principles. Students graduating with this Specialization will have learned the professional principles of nonprofit leadership, namely commitment, competence, scholarship, stewardship, diversity, and inclusiveness.

Data Analytics for Business
The best business ideas are generated, decisions taken, and issues resolved when management has clear insight into a particular situation. Good business insight comes from rigorous quantitative and qualitative analysis of the available data. Data in itself is merely facts and figures, but using data analysis tools and techniques can help managers glean a deeper understanding of a business scenario and enhance decision-making capability. Data is extracted, analyzed, and categorized to identify key behavioral patterns.
This specialization includes the design of experiments, analysis of variance, categorical data analysis, regression analysis, time series/forecasting, and data visualization. Good data analysts are in high demand by leading companies around the world.
