Why Temple Rome?
Prepare for the Internationalizing Market
The United States and Europe make up the world’s largest GDPs. Future legal opportunities in these markets are limitless and Temple Rome’s program prepares you for these global possibilities. Even the most domestic practices require cultural competency in a rapidly globalizing job market.
Build Your Global Legal Network
Your network is one of the most important aspects of your career. The Temple Rome program enables you to meet and develop relationships with distinguished Temple faculty members, lawyers, firms, employers, and other law school students from around the world. Take advantage of this opportunity to build your network and you will join a passionate, global group of Temple Rome alumni.
Give Yourself an Edge
Studying at Temple Rome will not just transform your resume, it will transform you. The global context acquired by studying in a comparative manner alongside American J.D. students will allow you to think more critically about your legal system and profession. Studying at Temple Rome creates experiences that enable you to distinguish yourself when interviewing, networking, or applying to LL.M. programs for foreign-trained lawyers.
Campus
Temple Rome has a central location, establishing its new campus at Piazza di Spagna—one of the most notable landmarks in the Eternal City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Culture
International students are often amazed by the one-on-one attention that Temple Law professors devote to every student. Given the smaller class sizes (ordinarily no more than 30 students), foreign-trained law students and lawyers will feel comfortable speaking with your professors. You will also find it easy to make friends among the American law students visiting Rome as part of the program, as they are eager to learn about other cultures and network with you.
Application Information
International applicants must have completed at least two years of their first law degree. Practicing attorneys are encouraged to apply.
Application Deadline: February 15 for students that require a visa. March 15 for all other students.

Curriculum
Curriculum
Each year, based on the expertise of the faculty members teaching in the program, we offer at least 4 ABA credits (roughly 8 ECTS) over 4 weeks. The courses are announced in the Fall of the prior year. For the Summer of 2025, the following courses will be offered to international students:
International Civil Litigation – 2 credit hours (Prof. DeJarnatt)
With the globalization of business transactions, cross-border civil litigation has become common. This course will examine the international law that governs “foreign” relations between individuals or business entities and will discuss the theory and practice of international civil dispute settlement. The issues it will cover include determining the proper forum, finding the applicable law, judicial assistance (e.g. service of process, discovery, and foreign judgment enforcement), and litigation involving a foreign state. It will also discuss such important practical matters as how to draft a dispute settlement clause, how to meaningfully choose a forum and the applicable law to more effectively protect the client’s interest, and how to address potential obstacles facing lawyers engaging in international practice.
Advising the Multinational Company on Global Legal Issues – 2 credit hours (Prof. Lipson)
This interactive and participatory course is intended to provide a survey of the types of issues confronting lawyers, particularly in-house lawyers, who advise multinational corporations on a worldwide basis. The areas to be discussed include topics that will cross corporate law, tax law, labor and employment law, employee benefits, litigation, and corporate compliance. Real-life examples will be used to illustrate the complicated nature yet importance of this type of practice. Further, in addition to the more substantive legal topics to be covered, the course will also be interspersed with practice tips, jurisdictional practice highlights, and ethical considerations for the multinational practitioner. The success of the course depends highly on each class member coming to class prepared, and more importantly, on each class member participating in our discussions. Because of this, class participation will account for 30% of the final grade. The remaining 70% of a student’s grade will be based on a final paper and presentation (weighted equally). Note: This course does not satisfy the graduation writing requirement.
Global Legal Perspectives – 1 credit hour
Global Legal Perspectives is a 1-credit course that is exclusive to the Rome summer program. This course engages students both inside and outside the classroom to provide a comparative outlook on the similarities and differences between the Italian and American law traditions. The course syllabus accentuates the unconventional comparative analysis aspect of this course, offering in-class lectures that feature guest lecturers and experts in niche legal fields, and incorporating external learning opportunities through experiential class field trips. The course exposes law students to the Italian legal profession and enables students to gain an appreciation for the Civil Law system and the legal traditions specific to Italy and the European Union. Throughout the program, students are given the invaluable opportunity to become immersed in the Italian culture while participating in professional networking engagements.
