Study contents
Global governance and global phenomena are transforming the way we work for health both nationally and internationally.
Our program offers a unique opportunity to study the intertwined disciplines of public and global health. Students will be equipped with the necessary expertise and skills to work in the complex setting of contemporary and emerging health challenges. All courses are firmly grounded in international research and have a strong focus on transferring this knowledge into practice.
Our vision is for students to gain a firm grounding in the core competencies of both public and global health. The public health component corresponds to a Master of Public Health (MPH). We also want to equip our graduates with practical skills for their future working life: an optional internship or a work placement is part of the program and real-life cases and assignments are studied in the courses.
Global phenomena affect well-being and health in both the global South and the global North, transforming the way we work for health on both national and international levels. It is our mission to advocate for health and promote conditions in which people can be healthy across the world.

Thesis
The Master’s Thesis Studies in the PGH program are 30 ECTS credits. This comprises two Master’s Thesis seminars, together with 5 ECTS credits, and an individually planned, designed, and written Master's Thesis. In the process of writing the thesis, the student learns how to provide constructive comments on the scientific work of fellow students, can utilize feedback given by others, and learns how to present his/her scientific work to others. After writing an accepted Master’s Thesis, the student will be able to set specific objectives for a research or development project and has the ability to determine objectives, choose the research or evaluation methods, and carry out and report a small study or development project based on existing or self-collected data.

Career Opportunities
Equipped with knowledge and skills, our graduates go to work in diverse fields such as governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, academia, and private industry in Finland or elsewhere.
Internship / Work Placement
The optional 3-month internship is a chance to get your foot in the door of a possible future employer and to enhance networking with other professionals in your field.
The best time for the internship is usually in the second year of the program or in the summer. The chosen internship should be relevant to the student and the program and may be in an international setting or in Finland.
As a rule, it is the responsibility of the student to identify and apply to host organizations, which match their interests and career goals. The internship host can be e.g. a national or an international organization, a non-governmental organization, a research institute, or a company. The faculty will assist the student with the practical arrangements and may be able to help identify potential internship hosts. Some options for funding an internship or work placement are available through the University.
Postgraduate study opportunities
As the master’s degree of 120 ECTS credits gives eligibility for doctoral studies, many of our graduates have also gone on to pursue doctoral studies in public and global health, and other disciplines. Several graduates have applied to and been selected for the IPPE program (International Doctoral Programme in Epidemiology and Public Health) in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Tampere University.
