Key Summary
Introduction
Towards a SAFER future
There’s an increasing global demand for experts and highly qualified professionals within the fields of national and international security. This need has been recognized by public agencies, international organizations, businesses, and NGOs working within the field of security management and international security. Solving societal and organizational problems posed by the continuously changing security environment requires experts who can innovatively and strategically integrate state-of-the-art scientific knowledge into the domain of security from both public administration and international relations.
The Master’s Programme in Security Management and Politics (SAFER) educates experts who specialise in either International Security or Security Governance. Depending on their major, students graduate with a Master’s Degree in Social Sciences, MSc (International Security) or Master’s Degree in Administrative Sciences, MSc (Security Governance).
Broad and strategic understanding of international security
The International Security specialisation educates future professionals in international relations and strategic studies. Graduates will gain a profound understanding of the conceptual foundations and practical policy implications of the current international security environment.
The curriculum allows customisation among diverse subjects, including security studies, strategic analysis, statecraft and diplomacy, crisis management, environmental security, nuclear weapons, arms control, and proliferation. Moreover, as part of their elective studies, students can broaden their expertise with a wide range of courses taught in other international master’s degree programmes at Tampere University.
Interactive learning and policy-relevant analytical skills
SAFER emphasises interactive on-campus teaching, guidance, and learning. Students enhance their analytical and professional communication skills through essays, presentations, policy-relevant reports, and briefing papers. With guidance from the members of the faculty teaching staff, students prepare a master’s thesis addressing a pertinent research puzzle in International Security Studies.
