Key Summary
Power electronics and electromechanics – Driving the world
Are you fascinated by electrical engineering and want to have an impact in building a more sustainable future society? Come to study Power Electronics and Electromechanics in our Master’s program. You will learn about state-of-the-art and cutting-edge technologies and find applications in renewable energy sources, smart grids, and variable speed drives – to name only some!
Power electronics and electromechanics have a major role in society – now and in the future
Power electronics are used for processing voltages and currents when converting electrical energy from one form into another. Power-electronic devices can be found in almost every electric device from household applications to transportation, and industry, as well as electricity generation, transmission, and distribution. It has been estimated that in the near future, 80 % of all the generated electrical energy will pass through a power electronic converter.
Electromechanics refers to the process of converting electrical energy into mechanical energy and vice versa. Nearly all electrical energy is produced by rotating electrical generators and roughly half of this energy is converted back to mechanical energy with electrical motors driven by power-electronic converters. The trend of transportation electrification will further increase the need for electrical motor drives. Together, power electronics and electromechanics are the key technologies for enabling the energy transition in transportation and renewable electricity generation.
High-class education and collaboration with the industry
This Master’s program will provide you with the necessary skills for understanding, analyzing, and implementing power-electronic and electromechanical energy-conversion devices in a wide range of applications. The program is suited for students who are eager to put theory into practice for ensuring sustainable use of energy and raw materials in the future society. We offer high-class education based on the latest knowledge and research delivered by our accomplished staff. Moreover, our university collaborates closely with the industry in the Tampere area. This helps our students to find valuable thesis-work opportunities and jobs after graduation.
Tampere University offers a limited number of partial scholarships as well as an early bird discount to support fee-paying students.
Tampere University tuition fee scholarships
The Tampere University tuition fee scholarship is an exclusive opportunity awarded to a select number of the best-performing applicants. It is a highly selective scholarship; in total, only individual Tampere University scholarships are awarded to exceptionally qualified applicants. Scholarships are not awarded in all programmes.
Tampere University tuition fee scholarships awarded at admission cover 50% of the tuition fees for the programme duration.
Early bird offer
The early bird offer is available to all fee-paying students who have not been awarded a Tampere University tuition fee scholarship upon admission. The early bird offer gives a €2,000 reduction on the programme tuition fee during the first year of studies.
Students may take advantage of the early bird offer by accepting the offered study place and paying the reduced first-year tuition fee within two weeks after receiving information on admission.
This offer is valid only for the first year of studies.
In addition to these offers available at admission, students who complete a Bachelor's degree at Tampere University will be eligible to receive a €2,000 reduction on their tuition fee for the first year of Master's degree studies at Tampere University, provided they graduate from their Bachelor's programme within three academic years.
How to apply for scholarships?
To be considered for Tampere University Scholarships, you must apply for the scholarship as part of your application for admission during the application period for admission. You will apply for Tampere University Scholarships with the same online application you use to apply for admission at Studyinfo.fi.
All application information you submit in your application for admission at Studyinfo.fi, including your educational documents, is available for the admissions committee evaluating your scholarship application. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of overall academic assessment, in which all application information and educational documents, as well as the scholarship application letter (if applicable), are taken into consideration and can be decisive. The decision on the scholarship will be communicated to you together with information on admission.
The early bird offer is available without a separate application to all fee-paying students who have not been awarded a Tampere University tuition fee scholarship.
Study contents
The studies in Power Electronics and Electromechanics provide a skillset within the context of the subjects in question. The main focus is on modeling, control, and applications of power electronics and electrical machines. The offered courses deal with state-of-the-art as well as cutting-edge technologies that relate to the aforementioned topics and find applications in renewable energy sources, smart grids, and variable speed drives, to name a few. To facilitate and enhance understanding, most courses are complemented by hands-on activities, either in the form of computer simulations or laboratory experiments.
We offer our students the opportunity for a broad, cross-disciplinary education. The students have the option to build a strong background in power electronics and/or electromechanics by focusing exclusively on their major studies. Nevertheless, there is the option to enrich their background by choosing from a rich variety of minor studies and supplementary courses. Hence, thanks to the flexibility in the curriculum and variety of courses, the enrolled students will be able to choose their main topic of study, namely power electronics or electromechanics, while following a path tailored to their main interests.
Structure of studies
The program is comprised of 120 ECTS. Courses are worth 90 ECTS and the remaining 30 ECTS are awarded for successfully completing a master's thesis. Each ECTS is equal to an average workload of 27 hours, including lectures, exercises, assignments, independent study, and an examination. The duration of the program is two years. Students spend three semesters completing courses and one semester preparing the final project (master's thesis). They start their studies in late August, and the academic year ends in late May.
Having a Master’s Degree provides a wide range of career opportunities in several fields of industry. The companies in Finland that manufacture power electronics and electrical machines have a strong and continuous need for employees who are specialized in this degree program. Possible job options include, but are not limited to, design and testing, research and development, and management and marketing. In addition, electricity production, transmission, and distribution companies are continuously looking for engineers in power electronics and electromechanics. If you are interested in deepening your knowledge in the area, particularly from a theoretical point of view, the academy constantly offers positions for post-graduate studies where you can pursue a doctoral degree.
Co-operation with other parties
Tampere university is a well-known institute among the companies in Tampere area. The university has a good reputation and has had a lot of co-operation with the companies during the years. This certainly helps the students to find valuable thesis-work opportunities in the companies, and most often, those students are employed by these companies once graduated.
In addition to studies in one’s own programme, students may take full advantage of the teaching offered by the Tampere higher education community ranging from technical to vocational studies in various fields.
