Our two-year Master's Programme educates professionals in environmental engineering and circular economy. With us, you will learn about processes and technologies to produce clean water, recover nutrients and metals minimize pollution, and support the sustainable use of natural resources. You will thus become an expert in promoting environmental sustainability.
To be a successful student in our Master’s Programme, you should have a background in an applicable field of engineering, for example in environmental engineering, biotechnology, or natural sciences. We appreciate proficiency in mathematics, strong motivation, and a vision for the future.
We offer a variety of courses, allowing you to specialize in areas like water technologies or circular economy. You will start building your career and industry connections during your studies.
With the knowledge and engineering mindset you gain, you'll have promising career opportunities in environmental engineering, including roles such as process engineer, consultant, or project manager. For those interested, pursuing a doctoral degree is also an option.
Study contents
The studies are composed of two blocks:
- Common core studies are compulsory for all students. They give you the basic information you need at the beginning of your studies when you explore the different opportunities for choosing your major studies. Common core studies also include guidance in writing and presenting your Master’s thesis.
- Major studies are a combination of compulsory and complementary courses. The compulsory courses give basis of sustainability thinking and engineering practices. Complementary courses can be selected from our wide range of topics. You can specialize in for example water technologies or circular economy. The topic of your Master’s thesis can be chosen to reflect your specialization.
- Free choice studies: You may also select up to 10 ECTS of courses based on your own interests. These can be for example language or communications studies. TAU offers a wide variety of courses to select from.
Structure of studies
The Master’s Programme (120 ECTS) may be completed in two years of full-time study. The curriculum consists of common core studies (30 ECTS), and major studies (90 ECTS – incl. 30 ECTS on Master’s thesis).
Tampere University offers a limited number of partial scholarships as well as an early bird discount to support fee-paying students.
Tampere University tuition fee scholarships
The Tampere University tuition fee scholarship is an exclusive opportunity awarded to a select number of the best-performing applicants. It is a highly selective scholarship; in total, only individual Tampere University scholarships are awarded to exceptionally qualified applicants. Scholarships are not awarded in all programmes.
Tampere University tuition fee scholarships awarded at admission cover 50% of the tuition fees for the programme duration.
Early bird offer
The early bird offer is available to all fee-paying students who have not been awarded a Tampere University tuition fee scholarship upon admission. The early bird offer gives a €2,000 reduction on the programme tuition fee during the first year of studies.
Students may take advantage of the early bird offer by accepting the offered study place and paying the reduced first-year tuition fee within two weeks after receiving information on admission.
This offer is valid only for the first year of studies.
In addition to these offers available at admission, students who complete a Bachelor's degree at Tampere University will be eligible to receive a €2,000 reduction on their tuition fee for the first year of Master's degree studies at Tampere University, provided they graduate from their Bachelor's programme within three academic years.
How to apply for scholarships?
To be considered for Tampere University Scholarships, you must apply for the scholarship as part of your application for admission during the application period for admission. You will apply for Tampere University Scholarships with the same online application you use to apply for admission at Studyinfo.fi.
All application information you submit in your application for admission at Studyinfo.fi, including your educational documents, is available for the admissions committee evaluating your scholarship application. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of overall academic assessment, in which all application information and educational documents, as well as the scholarship application letter (if applicable), are taken into consideration and can be decisive. The decision on the scholarship will be communicated to you together with information on admission.
The early bird offer is available without a separate application to all fee-paying students who have not been awarded a Tampere University tuition fee scholarship.
After completing the program, you will be qualified to pursue a wide range of career opportunities in the different fields of environmental engineering and circular economy. Our graduates are eligible to work for example in municipalities, companies, and organizations as a developer, process engineers, consultants, researchers, or project managers in positions where knowledge and skills in environmental engineering are required. Following the successful completion of the program, you will also be eligible to apply for admission to doctoral programs in Finland or abroad.
