Key Summary
Make big sense of big data
Big data and data-driven methods are at the center of modern computer science, statistics, and computer engineering and hold great promise for the future.
Experts in analyzing data are needed for solving challenging data-driven problems such as understanding text documents, conversation, and social media; creating intelligent search engines; finding data-driven insights into phenomena of society, economy, and culture; creating data-driven solutions for medical and biological problems, and enabling self-driving cars and autonomous robots.
Tampere University offers three related specializations that involve analysis, modeling, prediction, and computation with big data: the Data Science (MSc) specialization and the Statistical Data Analytics (MSc) specialization focus on computational and statistical algorithms for data mining and machine learning, with differing emphases, and the Signal Processing and Machine Learning (MSc Tech) specialization focuses on engineering accurate predictive machine learning models.
The Statistical Data Analytics (MSc) specialization features several similar topic areas as the Data Science (MSc) specialization but the Statistical Data Analytics (MSc) specialization places more emphasis on aspects of data science and artificial intelligence where statistical understanding and modeling of data uncertainty, variation and dependency is a crucial advantage.
Statistical Data Analytics (MSc) teaches you to understand data analysis and master necessary skills, such as data cleansing, integration, modeling and prediction, and interactive exploration of data and models. You will learn methods ranging from probabilistic approaches through efficient data mining algorithms to flexible deep learning with neural networks. You will also learn to present data analysis results to decision-makers with descriptive summaries and visualizations.
Statistical Data Analytics (MSc) is one of the specialisations in the Master’s Programme in Computing Sciences and Electrical Engineering.
Study contents
The analysis of data has a central role in modern information society. Organizations in both the public and private sectors are collecting vast data sets, and an increasing amount of public sector data is made open. However, data - assumed to be an important asset for organizations - is useless unless it is analyzed. The analysis is required to find regularities, such as trends or groupings, and to relate the data to other data sets within an organization or in scattered online repositories.
Analysis needs activities such as data cleansing and other preprocessing, data integration, modeling and prediction, interactive and iterative visualization of data, and models for the refinement of hypotheses and models. The presentation of intermediate and final results to decision-makers requires mastery of visualization and reporting methods. Successful analysts need skills in both computational and statistical topics.
This specialization educates top-level experts in computational and statistical data analysis who possess knowledge and skills for the aforementioned tasks and understand the overall processes of data analysis.
Structure of studies
Master’s degree comprises 120 ECTS credits. Each ECTS credit is about 27 hours of student work. Depending on the specialization, courses are worth 90 ECTS and the remaining 30 ECTS are awarded for successfully completing a Master's thesis. The duration of the program is two years. Students usually spend three semesters completing courses and one semester preparing the Master's thesis. The studies start in late August, and the academic year ends in late May.
Master’s Programme in Computing Sciences consists of seven specializations, leading either to a Master of Science, or Master of Science in Technology degree:
- Data Science (MSc)
- Human-Technology Interaction (MSc)
- Human-Technology Interaction (MSc Tech)
- Signal Processing and Machine Learning (MSc Tech)
- Software, Web & Cloud (MSc)
- Software, Web & Cloud (MSc Tech)
- Statistical Data Analytics (MSc).
The curriculum of the Master’s Programme in Computing Sciences 2022-2023 is available online (please note that this is the public view, students have access to more information via an electronic tool).
Students admitted to a Master’s Programme may be required to complement their earlier degree with complementary studies. The complementary studies will be decided at the faculty case by case (maximum 60 ECTS credits). The list of possible complementary studies is given in the curriculum under the section Prerequisities
Tampere University offers a limited number of partial scholarships as well as an early bird discount to support fee-paying students.
Tampere University tuition fee scholarships
The Tampere University tuition fee scholarship is an exclusive opportunity awarded to a select number of the best-performing applicants. It is a highly selective scholarship; in total, only individual Tampere University scholarships are awarded to exceptionally qualified applicants. Scholarships are not awarded in all programmes.
Tampere University tuition fee scholarships awarded at admission cover 50% of the tuition fees for the programme duration.
Early bird offer
The early bird offer is available to all fee-paying students who have not been awarded a Tampere University tuition fee scholarship upon admission. The early bird offer gives a €2,000 reduction on the programme tuition fee during the first year of studies.
Students may take advantage of the early bird offer by accepting the offered study place and paying the reduced first-year tuition fee within two weeks after receiving information on admission.
This offer is valid only for the first year of studies.
In addition to these offers available at admission, students who complete a Bachelor's degree at Tampere University will be eligible to receive a €2,000 reduction on their tuition fee for the first year of Master's degree studies at Tampere University, provided they graduate from their Bachelor's programme within three academic years.
How to apply for scholarships?
To be considered for Tampere University Scholarships, you must apply for the scholarship as part of your application for admission during the application period for admission. You will apply for Tampere University Scholarships with the same online application you use to apply for admission at Studyinfo.fi.
All application information you submit in your application for admission at Studyinfo.fi, including your educational documents, is available for the admissions committee evaluating your scholarship application. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of overall academic assessment, in which all application information and educational documents, as well as the scholarship application letter (if applicable), are taken into consideration and can be decisive. The decision on the scholarship will be communicated to you together with information on admission.
The early bird offer is available without a separate application to all fee-paying students who have not been awarded a Tampere University tuition fee scholarship.
As a graduate, you will have knowledge and skills for data analytics and understand the overall data analytics process. Such analysts can be employed in analysis firms, as in-house analysts in companies producing big data, and in companies and organizations that gather and analyze public and private data, including government agencies, journalism, insurance, law enforcement, and finance, as well as in public and private research.
Co-operation with other parties
In addition to studies in one’s own Master’s Programme, students may take full advantage of the teaching offered by the Tampere higher education community ranging from technical to vocational studies in various fields.
Further study opportunities
This master's degree provides the required background if you wish to pursue doctoral studies at Tampere University or elsewhere. There are no tuition fees for doctoral studies at Tampere University.
