Introduction

Master of Arts in Teaching, MAT

Offered as a Master of Arts program

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is a teacher preparation program that leads to an Oregon Preliminary teaching license. Candidates choose to do either the Multiple Subjects (Elementary) endorsement or a Single Subject endorsement. The MAT program is offered in two formats: the one-year program, which starts in June and is full-time for four quarters and the two-year program, which is a twenty-one-month program beginning in September. Students progress through the program in a cohort arrangement: they enter together, enroll in the same classes, and finish together as a community of learners. Upon successful completion, students receive the Master of Arts in Teaching degree in addition to the Oregon teaching license.

In order to qualify for the MAT program, candidates must show content area preparation. There are course prerequisites for each endorsement area. There is also an entrance exam requirement. Candidates must also show evidence of successful experiences working with youth the age they plan to teach. Public school classroom experiences are preferred.
