What is Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management?
Industrial engineering is a diverse branch of engineering that focuses on how to improve the way things are done, eliminate waste, and maximize efficiencies in business and industry.
As an industrial engineering and engineering management major at South Dakota Mines, you will be trained in a broad spectrum of engineering disciplines that will prepare you for a wide range of engineering careers.
What does an industrial engineer do?
After earning your industrial engineering degree from South Dakota Mines, you might manage business operations or supervise workplace safety and quality control. You might work in the industry to make manufacturing processes more efficient.
As an industrial engineer, you will have the option to work in a broad ranch of industries, such as automotive manufacturing, aerospace, mining, healthcare, finance, education, and more. Some duties an industrial engineer might do include:
• Design facilities for people with disabilities
• Oversee workplace safety
• Model logistics for humanitarian relief
• Develop management control systems to make financial planning and cost analysis more efficient
• Review production schedules, engineering specifications, process flows and other information to understand a manufacturing process
• Design and enact quality control procedures to minimize costs
• Gathering data
• Data analysis
• Design layout of equipment, materials, and workspace to identify efficiencies
• Estimate production costs

Scholarships and Funding
International students may seek scholarship opportunities but should be aware that many scholarships are limited to US citizens or permanent residents. South Dakota Mines does not offer scholarships specifically for international students. You must be ADMITTED by January 15 of the year you are planning to enroll in the fall semester if you wish to be considered for scholarships. Scholarships are only awarded for a start date of the fall semester. Please see the Scholarships website for information on Mines scholarships.
International students are NOT eligible for South Dakota Mines or federal loan programs and should not apply for such financial assistance.
