Introduction
This certificate is an introductory qualification in the Persian language. Students acquire a solid initial knowledge of the written and spoken language of modern Iran and study the historical and cultural background of the Middle East. When taken full-time (in one year) it corresponds to the first year of the BA programme in Persian. No prior knowledge of Persian is required.
Part-time Students
The part-time syllabus allows a fuller engagement with the Persian language. Year 1 is devoted to the intensive introductory course in Persian Language I (2 units). Students normally follow this with Persian Language II and either Classical Persian Prose Texts or Persian Poetry 1.
Alternatively, students can take a more gradual path to acquisition of language by enrolling on Elementary written Persian in the first year, followed by Elementary Persian texts in the subsequent year. On this path, two other course units are chosen from the available options to complete the syllabus.
