Introduction
A morning surf, followed by a lecture on the anatomical basis of the human musculoskeletal system; physiotherapy in the afternoon, and then a game of soccer or yoga on the beach? Study one term of “Sports Science & Physiotherapy” at the Medical Faculty of Udayana University and explore Bali’s unique sports and wellbeing culture. This course is designed as a 1-semester study abroad program that consists of lectures, practical training, workshops, and excursions. All classes are held in English. The program introduces water sports as one of the most important components of the everyday tourist’s life in Bali and provides insight into the sports of the tropics, health and fitness, and sports science and physiotherapy. Be it surfing, diving, yoga, fitness, or the application of traditional healing methods, theory and practice go hand in hand.

15 Weeks
The 15-week program combines lectures and guest lectures with weekly excursions, training sessions, workshops, and cultural events. These activities are an integral part of the teaching and learning process.
5 Subjects
5 subjects give an insight into the unique sports and wellbeing culture of Southeast Asia. Explore “Water Sports,” “Sports of the Tropics,” “Physical Health & Fitness,” and “Sports Science & Physiotherapy.”
30 Credit Points
Within the Sports & Physiotherapy program, you can receive up to 30 credit points. All credits are transferable within the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and other credit systems such as the US credit system.

Optional 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training
After the semester, in addition to the Sports & Physiotherapy Program, advanced yogis can take the certified 200-hour yoga teacher training at Pranava Yoga in Bali. The 4-week course combines the traditional practices of Asana, Meditation, and Pranayama with yoga philosophy, anatomy, various practical exercises, time for self-study, teaching methodology, and basics for the appropriate teaching practice. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive the Yoga Alliance RYT 200 qualification, the international standard for Yoga Teaching. With this certificate, graduates can register as a Yoga Teacher (RYT) with Yoga Alliance.

Curriculum
Water Sports (8 ECTS)
As the island of Bali offers various types of beaches and stunning landscapes with adventurous rivers, water sports have become an integral part of local daily activities. This course takes the natural potentials of perfect ocean waves, deep blue coral reefs, spring rivers, and the local tradition of yoga practices as perfect conditions and study materials to learn the techniques of water sports. This course will enable participants to attain basic skills in water sports through careful training.
Sports Science & Physiotherapy (5 ECTS)
The module provides a basic understanding of sports science including the energy system, diet and nutrition, psychological effects of exercises, first aid, management of injuries, and herbal remedies. Physiotherapy and fitness concepts are introduced in the sports activities such as aerobic capacity, anaerobic capacity, muscle power, strength, endurance, agility, and speed.
Physical Health and Fitness (7 ECTS)
The course emphasizes physical activities and fitness through comprehensive workouts and exercises on muscles. In addition to regular workouts, participants will learn about basic scientific gym concepts including supplements, diet, bulking, and shaping.
Sports of the Tropics (5 ECTS)
This course offers comprehensive knowledge about various types of sports in tropical countries, especially in South East Asia. It describes the nature of the tropical climate and environment, which influences the nature of physical activities, also in the context of society, culture, tradition, and equipment.
Indonesian Language, History & Culture (5 ECTS)
This subject combines a traditional Indonesian language course with units that focus on the history and culture of Indonesia. The emphasis of the language course is on conversation. It introduces students to basic vocabulary in Bahasa Indonesia and provides them with the skills necessary to handle day-to-day situations. Besides the language part, the course intends to provide students with background knowledge of Indonesia’s history and social as well as cultural development. Particular attention is given to the historiography of nation-building, religions, and society.
Program Outcome
At the end of the program, students who satisfactorily complete all course requirements will be awarded certificates as follows:
- A Certificate stating that the student has attended the program.
- An Academic Transcript showing the student’s performance in the program. The grades in the transcript are the final marks.
- A Certificate stating that the student has participated in workshops and academic excursions (on request).
