Introduction

Master in Pulp and Paper Technology (PPT)

Due to the impact of globalization and the significance of the technology expansion, it became imperative to prepare students in pulp and paper technology in the Southeast Asia (SEA) region. This is especially important because of the strong presence of pulp and paper industries within this region. The government of Finland generously met this need resulting in the establishment in 1996 of the Pulp and Paper Technology Program (PPT) at the Prestigious AIT. The PPT program offers academic and professional curricula with pulp, paper, bio drying and biorefining specializations for candidates with science and engineering backgrounds within the multidisciplinary research and education environment of AIT. The PPT program along with continuing development of course benefiting industry and in cooperation with North American and European research and educational centers aims to channel information about relevant worldwide academic achievements into SEA pulp and paper and allied industries. These industries thus gain innovative ways to compete successfully in the global marketplace.

The PPT program of SERD provides students with comprehensive understanding of the pulp and paper industry, its unit processes, environmental aspects and the sustainability of the processes and products. PTT is offering two master's degree options and eight certificate programs with specific focus on core areas of pulp and paper technology.

Facilities

The PPT program of AIT has the most advanced and extensive laboratory facilities for faculty and student use, including a complete wet Lab. Some of the state-of-the-art equipment in this area includes a Valley beater, PFI mill, Escher Wyss conical refiner, pressure screen, flat screen, Bauer McNett classifier, dynamic drainage jar, Deinking unit, MC Pulper, British mold, Finnish mold equipped with white water circulation system, Zeta potential tester, charge density tester, Tappi press, cylinder dryer calender, and coating equipment. The conditioning room has most of the necessary instruments for evaluation of physical, optical, coating and printing properties of paper and board. Some of the specialized research equipment includes a single vessel 6.5-liter laboratory digester, six-vessel laboratory digester system capable of partially simulating a continuous digester at different temperature and pressure, bleaching reactor, ozone bleaching system, bio-drying pilot plant and a full set of biorefining equipment.

Admission and Graduation Requirements

Basic requirements for enrollment in the professional master program include a BS in any field. Knowledge and/or experience in the paper industry would be very helpful to complete this program efficiently, but this is not required. A total of 32 credit hours is required for the program. Hours earned in professional program may be applied toward Academic Master’s degree or Ph.D.

For a Professional degree from AIT, students have earned the required number of credits from coursework and the Special Project. Credits are given only for courses which students have passed in examinations.
