Introduction

Nursing courses are open only to students who are officially admitted to the nursing career ladder curriculum.

The associate degree nursing program is approved by the Michigan Board of Nursing and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). This program provides advanced nursing theory and clinical practice in caring for adults, children, and families to prepare graduates for entry-level positions in hospitals, long-term care facilities, medical offices, home health, and other community settings. Students who satisfactorily complete the associate degree nursing program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN) as a step in obtaining licensure as a registered nurse (RN).

Students need to complete the pre-requisite courses and meet other admission requirements. Students may defer their admission only one time, otherwise, the student will need to reapply and meet the application requirements at that time. Students who do not meet nursing department deadlines or have been accepted to the program and then are “no call, no show” to start the program will be canceled and not eligible to reapply to the program in the future. After August 1 for fall start cohorts, and after October 1 for winter start cohorts, preference will be given for students to be pulled up to spots vacated at the last minute by other students, with students who have completed the NURS 104 - Pharmacology for Nurses course or the NATP 115 - Nursing Assistant Course or are currently enrolled in either course and have current passing status.

Nursing courses must be taken in sequence. Courses typically include one day of theory with two days of clinical. Clinical sessions are offered on the day or afternoon shifts with the potential for weekend rotations. Clinical rotation schedules will be determined dependent upon clinical site availability. A minimum grade of 80% in each nursing course is required for progression to the next course. Academic courses, other than nursing, must be completed according to application requirements. Computer lab use and computer testing is required in this program. Students will need to have a computer device for home and on-campus use that meets the requirements provided prior to entry to the program. Students must furnish and maintain uniforms and supplies as required by the department and clinical facilities. Students must meet health and clinical requirements, have a negative drug screen on the first attempt (marijuana use still prohibited), and pass a criminal background check. This program is offered at the Livonia Main Campus. Students are admitted at the beginning of the fall semester or the winter semester.
