About
The School of Biomedical Sciences (SBS), established in 2010 at The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the first institution of its kind in Hong Kong, dedicated to advancing biomedical research and education. Formed through the strategic merger of the pre-clinical departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry (Medicine), Pharmacology, and Physiology, our School has grown into a world-class hub for transformative research and education.
Our Vision
The School of Biomedical Sciences aims to nurture physicians and other healthcare workers who are abreast of current biomedical advances and scientific investigators who have the ability to do cutting-edge research that will lead to alleviation of human suffering. We envision to become a world-recognized leader in selected research areas with particular relevance to Hong Kong and China.
Our Missions
- To promote cutting-edge biomedical research through introduction of innovative technologies and collaboration among basic scientists of different disciplines.
- To facilitate translational research by providing platforms that will enhance interdisciplinary collaboration among basic science investigators and clinicians.
- To generate synergies in team teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- To nurture the next generation of basic researchers and physician scientists in Hong Kong, China, Asia and around the world.
We have established three Thematic Research Programs:
- Cancer Biology and Experimental Therapeutics
- Developmental and Regenerative Biology
- Neural, Vascular, and Metabolic Biology
Supported by state-of-the-art facilities, advanced instrumentation, and dedicated core laboratories, our faculty and students drive high-impact discoveries that translate fundamental insights into innovative solutions for global health challenges.
To nurture young talents equipped with comprehensive biomedical knowledge and skills, we offer rigorous postgraduate training through the MPhil-PhD Programme in Biomedical Sciences (launched 2010) and undergraduate training through the BSc in Biomedical Sciences Programme (BMS) (launched 2016).
The MPhil-PhD Programme is an integrated and research-oriented pathway from Master's to Doctoral studies, allowing students to develop deep disciplinary expertise and versatility to address complex biomedical challenges. Students engage in high-impact events such as Postgraduate Research Day, Annual Graduate Seminar, and the annual Summer Workshop to gain firsthand cutting-edge research experience, networking, and global connections. Supported by Postgraduate Studentships and scholarships, it prepares graduates for academia, research institutes, and industry.
The BMS Programme delivers a highly practical and career-oriented curriculum with specialization in Biomedical Research, Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship, or Health Services and Consultation. Through CUHK’s strong networks, students gain hands-on research and laboratory training, Clinical and health-service exposure, Innovation and technology immersions, and Mentorship from experts. It equips them with the knowledge, competencies, and confidence to thrive in competitive biomedical fields.
Graduates from both programmes excel in advanced studies at top institutions with competitive fellowships, or in versatile roles like pharmaceutical professionals, clinical trial experts, patent trainees, genetic counsellors, and healthcare innovators.
