Key Summary
The Master of Science in Applied Nanotechnology is unique in the Netherlands. The most distinguishing feature is its focus on the development of innovative micro- and nanotechnology-based products and applications. The fusion of elements from biology, chemistry, electrical engineering, and physics results in nanotechnological materials and devices with unprecedented properties. The program only starts in September and is taught entirely in English.

No Pre-master Required
With a suitable Bachelor’s degree you can start directly with this Master's; there is no need for a pre-master.
During your Master Applied Nanotechnology
The duration of the master’s programme is two years. The programme provides you with a thorough basis in practical experience supported by appropriate theory. During the 2nd year, you'll be working on your master thesis project at a company. Check the section ‘Course Content’ for specific information.
After graduating with a Master in Applied Nanotechnology
The programme provides a thorough preparation for a position in the nanotechnology-based industry. The Twente region is a hotspot for hightech businesses focusing on the ‘commercialization’ of nano- and microtechnology. Our institution is cooperating intensively with several of these. Furthermore, we have a close interaction with the University of Twente. The resulting platform offers excellent job opportunities in the fast growing field of micro- and nanotechnology.

For first-year students
NL Scholarship (NLS)
A scholarship meant for non-EU/EEA students who pay the full institutional tuition fee, and meet the specific requirements: a GPA of 80% or higher and an IELTS 7.0 or higher. The scholarship amounts to € 5,000. You will receive this in the first year of your studies.
Saxion Talent Scholarship (STS)
A scholarship meant for non-EU/EEA students who apply for a Bachelor programme, pay the full institutional tuition fee and meet the specific requirements: a GPA of 75% or higher and an IELTS 6.0 or higher. The scholarship amounts to € 2,500. You will receive this in the first year of your studies.
Meet Saxion online, on campus or in your home country
The master’s programme has a standard duration of two years and English is the operational language. The programme provides you with a thorough basis in practical experience supported by appropriate theory. During the 2nd year, you'll be working on your master’s thesis project at a company. Upon graduation, you are entitled to use the title of Master of Science (MSc).
The first year
Theory, practice and a project
The first semester of the year is mainly taken up by courses cementing the fundament of your (nanotechnological) knowledge. Subjects include mathematics, physical chemistry and micro-/nano-engineering. In the third quarter you are assigned an individual project on which you will be working until the end of the first year.
Nanotechnology in Twente
Twente is the ultimate nanotechnology hotspot in the Netherlands. The region boasts impressive facilities and know-how in this specific subject, including, but not limited to, research groups at both Saxion and the University of Twente. Both MESA+ and MIRA are recognized throughout the world as leading institutions with state-of-the-art facilities. Furthermore, the area offers excellent job opportunities within the field of micro- and nanotechnology.
Examples of projects are:
- E-nose
Designing an electronic nose that can detect specific molecules selectively at extreme low concentrations. This sensor can subsequently be applied for instance in health care or the detection of illegal explosives. - Sustainable and Circular Electronics
Lifetime Extension Technologies; using micro/nano sensors to monitor the health of sensitive electronic components in realtime. - Lab-on-a-chip
Designing a point-of-care test with which GP’s can perform tests on patients needing a minimal amount of saliva.
This study programme is officially accredited by the NVAO (Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders), ensuring recognised quality and academic standards across Europe.
Twente, the dynamic region in which Enschede is situated, is a hotspot for high-tech businesses in the Netherlands. Nano-technology is one of the driving forces for this growth and generates an increasing number of jobs in the Netherlands, particularly in the Twente region. As a consequence the region boasts impressive facilities and expertise in this subject. Saxion works closely with the University of Twente, public sector partners and numerous nanotechnology-based companies and thus provides our graduates with an excellent platform to enter the job market.
A career in nanotechnology
As a graduate of the Applied Nanotechnology Master's programme, you have the skills and knowledge to find employment in a range of technical positions within, but not limited to, the micro- and nanotechnological domain. As a member of an R&D-team of a start-up, a crossover or a knowledge institution, typical tasks include developing new products, exploring and/or conquering new markets or, designing new applications. If you aspire a business-facing position, our Master’s programme will give you the qualifications to fully utilize your technical know-how to market innovative applications and customize them to the customers specifications and desires. Examples of typical professions for our graduates are:
- Application engineer
In this role your main task is to develop specific applications for a product, for example a sensor to detect fireworks at the entrance of football-stadiums. - Product engineer
Your role is to convert a set of wishes of the customer into a new nanotechnological-based product. Subtasks may include building and testing prototypes and designing the production process. - Project engineer
As a project engineer, you will be working on projects with the purpose of delivering functional nano- / microtechnological products that meet the requirements set by both market and modern-day society. - R&D engineer
The main task for a research & development engineer is performing applied-research-based projects, eventually leading to a marketable and profitable product.
