Industry and innovation
If you understand how a textile product is made, you can apply that knowledge to build something better. That is why this programme puts particular emphasis on the development of materials and products. The industry urgently needs to devise and implement more sustainable and smarter solutions to improve its outputs and outcomes. These solutions can be business, consumer or government-led. European legislation, for example, now requires the textile industry to make significant sustainability changes in production as well as procurement. As this is a global endeavour with English as its working language, you will conduct your second-year projects in English at CEFR B2 or C1 level.
Sustainable consumption and production
In our programme, you will learn how the textile industry works by examining, for example, how the supply chain is organised. With this knowledge, you can go a step further and therefore you are challenged to come up with solutions and ideas that can change the industry. For example, by developing sustainable ways of producing or offering sustainable products. In all subjects, the desire of the sustainable consumer is always central.

First Year
Subjects year 1
Most subjects fall under projects. These include lessons in the studio, the laboratory, the knitting room, and the computer room for the Adobe and CLO3D lessons. You will also take subjects that are separate from the project, on which you will be tested. In the first year of the fashion program, you will be taught the following subjects:
- Textiles 1-4
- Commerce
- Communication
- Research
- English
In addition to the core study, you can opt into workshops aimed at your personal development, allowing you to discover your strengths, or learn how to plan better, for example. Every quarter, you will have at least one meeting with your study coach to discuss how your studies are progressing and whether you would benefit from some extra help. The subject 'sustainability' is an important thread running through the program. You will cover topics such as ethics and corporate social responsibility. You will learn how to think critically and look for solutions and alternatives for the fair production of clothes and textiles. Your skills can help future generations!
Second Year
Deepening your expertise
The second year of HBO Fashion & Textiles Technologies sees a deepening of the first year. You will work on the same themes: Buying, Collection, Material, and Into the Future.
Subjects Year 2
We raise the bar in the second year. And it gets even more interesting! You will purchase products from our partners in China and India, gain even more knowledge of creating a collection, and conduct research for a fashion or textile company. Now is the time to start preparing for your internship and minor, fully supported by your study coach. Together you will discuss what the possibilities are and find you the best fit.
Third Year
Go international!
The third year of the program focuses on your minor and your work placement. You will have the opportunity to study at one of our partners in, for example, China, Spain, England, Sweden, Indonesia, or Canada for six months. You will also do an internship. Maybe you would like to gain experience in the purchasing department of Hünkemoller, Tommy Hilfiger, or G-Star? Or perhaps you would rather develop new materials for Rev'it, FEBRIK, or Ten Cate? The choice is yours!
Fourth Year
Collaboration and graduation
You start the fourth year with a Smart Solutions Project, collaborating with students from across different programs at Saxion, to devise a solution to an existing company problem. You could be working with students from Electronics, Business Administration, and Industrial Design, to name just a few. This results in surprising ideas. We guarantee it! In the last semester of the program, you graduate at a company or by yourself.
Job opportunities
With your qualifications, you can choose from a wide range of professions. You could, for example, become:
Buyer retail
As a buyer for companies like Karl Lagerfeld or Rev'it, you buy collections from different brands. You have to be able to cooperate with others, know what is going on in the market, and be stress-resistant. You are well aware of trends, you know your consumers and are knowledgeable about textiles and business economics. You are on the road a lot and make sure that everything you buy is delivered to the store(s) on time.
Buyer brand
As a buyer for a brand, you will be traveling a lot to visit suppliers. With the designer, you look at the new collection. Then you buy the fabrics for it and check if the samples meet the requirements. As the link between the designer and the producer your knowledge about textiles, the market, and the buying process is indispensable.
Materials Engineer
As a Materials Engineer, you look for possible new products or materials. You spend a lot of time in the laboratory and are well aware of the latest developments and of what is happening in the market. You are in regular contact with partners, research institutes, suppliers, and clients. You could work at a research center or a company like TenCate of Rev'it.
Product developer
As a product developer, you are the connection between designer, factory, and sales. You develop the collection with the designer, look at the financial feasibility with the sales department, and discuss with the factory how the product can be made. You also assess the first samples of a new product. Sometimes you will see 4 or 5 samples before a garment is approved for production.
Merchandiser
As a merchandiser, you have mainly financial responsibility. You think about questions like ‘how many are we buying, do we have enough budget to do that, where can we cut back and how much will we be left with per product?’ Merchandisers cooperate closely with the buyer/product developer and the production coordinator. If you are stress-resistant and love numbers as much as you love fashion this is the job for you.
