Master of Arts in Mediterranean Archeology

The course in Mediterranean Archaeology aims to extend the learning program in Archeology of the Department of Classics to an international audience.

Our teaching project is founded on a long experience of international master programs solicited and supported by the Sapienza Governance from 2010 through the agreement with other Institutions, various Summer Schools, and the participation of a CIVIS program including seven top European universities.

The top international ranking of the Archaeological studies in Sapienza enhanced the appeal of the teaching programs proposed by Sapienza for students all over the world.

The Mediterranean Archaeology master program proposes two curricula. The Curriculum in Mediterranean Archaeology offers a wide perspective on Archaeology from the Prehistory to the Middle Ages. The Curriculum in Paleolithic Archaeology offers to students interested in this ancient and fascinating period of Prehistory a dedicated program combining archaeology, archaeometry, and paleoanthropology. Moreover, the curriculum in Paleolithic Archaeology is articulated in a program entirely organized in Sapienza or organized as a CIVIS program joint title in the three universities of Tubingen, Sapienza, and Aix en Provence.

The curricula proposed by the Mediterranean Archaeology Master have a duration of two years. They are not conceived as just a copy of the master's in Archaeology offered in the Italian language. The curricula have a diachronic perspective, in the case of the Paleolithic curriculum, the students will survey a range of time of million years from the Lower Paleolithic to the Upper Paleolithic. The complex processes of evolution and change in the material culture and the landscape will be discussed in light of the most innovative methodology applied in archaeology.

Learning outcomes

The primary objective of the Master's Degree Course in Mediterranean Archeology consists of an in-depth study of the preparation achieved with the first-level study curriculum, with particular reference to the acquisition of methodologies and skills that allow a critical approach to individual archaeological data, correctly classified.

The course also aims to develop individual research skills about the scientific debate at an international level.

Specific objectives are the acquisition, in addition to individual technical-scientific knowledge, also of adequate professional skills in the cultures of the Mediterranean world, from prehistory to the Middle Ages.

The training objectives of the Course also include the enrichment of the skills achieved by the student in a strictly archaeological field with historical-artistic, museological, linguistic-literary, historical, paleoanthropological, bioarchaeological, and information technology knowledge applied to archaeology.

The training course was organized in such a way as to allow the student a complete education in the field of archaeology, histories, methodologies, and field activities.

The skills acquired allow the graduate to fully operate in the field of archaeological heritage management, both in terms of collaboration with research and protection bodies and in the management of archaeological excavations, documentation projects, museums, and archaeological parks. The composite training also from a historical-literary profile allows full operation in research projects on a national and international scale.

In the field of heritage enhancement and communication, it will be possible to access collaboration functions in communication activities, also in the field of specialized publishing in the sector.
