Key Summary
Introduction
International journalism in a changing media landscape
This one-year Master’s program provides a global perspective on journalism, investigating the role of journalism in different media systems and socio-cultural contexts, giving you the knowledge and skills necessary for work in an international setting. You will also examine changes to the global media and their implications for professional journalism.
Gain global perspectives on journalism’s role in societal issues
Are you interested in examining the role of the media in global conflict? Or reflecting on the changes in global media systems and professional journalism? This program brings together students with backgrounds in the social sciences and the humanities, providing you with the necessary skills to critically reflect on and autonomously analyze the role of journalism in various types of media systems and in different parts of the world, including the professional role of the journalist and freedom of the press in different places.
You will investigate the professional role of the journalist, ethical issues, and problems of media freedom and democracy while reflecting on and problematizing journalism and power. This program not only provides knowledge and skills that are vital when working in an international setting, it also provides the necessary formal qualification for admission to doctoral studies.
While the program’s focus is theoretical, as it provides a meta-perspective on journalism, you will have the opportunity to practice journalistic writing and meet experts and practitioners in the field of journalism.
Social issues to work with in the future
We have linked our education to the UN's 17 global goals for sustainable development. These are goals that you can get tools to work with in the future:
Gender Equality
Reduced Inequalities
Sustainable Cities and Communities
Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
Partnerships for the Goals
Curriculum
Journalism, democracy, and conflict
This is a one-year Master’s program. It starts in the autumn semester with a 15-credit course in Comparative Journalism Studies, which examines media systems, journalistic cultures (values, ideals, and practices), and press freedom in different parts of the world. This is followed by a 15-credit course in Journalism and International Conflicts in the second half of the autumn semester, which focuses on the role of journalism in mediatized conflicts, specifically regarding information warfare and propaganda. Each of these courses can be taken as a freestanding course.
The second semester concentrates on your dissertation, which is worth 15 credits and is an autonomous academic investigation of a particular subject. Throughout the year, you will be able to participate in research seminars and, in some cases, in ongoing media research projects at the Journalism department.
