Key Summary
The International Master's Programme in Economics (120 credits) provides you with deeper knowledge of economic theory and its application in the real world, providing skills that can benefit society in fields such as sustainable development or competition and regulation. You have the option to focus on an area of your choice and even to spend a semester studying at a different university or in another country.
Great flexibility and societally beneficial knowledge
Are you interested in gaining a deeper understanding of specific areas of the economic system and in improving skills that are benefit society? Do you want to do this while studying in an international environment?
Many societal issues have an economic dimension, so economic theory can be used to analyse them and look for possible solutions. This Master’s programme provides an in-depth examination of economic theory and its application in the real world, covering areas such as sustainable development, the environment, financial systems and international trade, and competition and regulation. Your studies will not only provide subject-specific knowledge, but you will also increase your skill set in areas such as making presentations, scholarly writing and programmes, enhancing your ability to work with and analyse complex materials.
Theoretical and methodological skills for analysing real-world problems
A Master’s programme is different from studying an undergraduate degree, as it requires more independent work and self-motivation. It also has a clear focus on in-depth analysis and the problematisation of knowledge. You learn to use your theoretical and methodological skills as tools to identify, structure, and analyze economic problems. This degree programme also provides you with insights into and in-depth knowledge of how companies and organisations develop and use their innovation capacity in global competition.
The third semester provides you with the opportunity to specialise in an area of your choice. You can choose from courses offered at Södertörn University or at other universities in Sweden and abroad. The fourth semester focuses on writing your dissertation.

Economists work in both the public and private sectors. In the private sector, this could include banks, insurance companies, consultancies, and businesses. In the public sector, economists are needed at central banks, ministries of finance, and think tanks, as well as in local government. Non-governmental organisations and charities also employ economists.
