Great flexibility and societally beneficial knowledge
Are you interested in gaining a deeper understanding of specific areas of the economic system and in improving skills that benefit society? Do you want to do this while studying in an international environment?
Many societal issues have an economic dimension, so economic theory can be used to analyze them and look for possible solutions. This Master’s program provides an in-depth examination of economic theory and its application in the real world, covering areas such as sustainable development, the environment, financial systems and international trade, and competition and regulation. Your studies will not only provide subject-specific knowledge, but you will also increase your skill set in areas such as making presentations, scholarly writing, and programs, enhancing your ability to work with and analyze complex materials.
Curriculum
Theoretical and methodological skills for analyzing real-world problems
A Master’s program is different from studying for an undergraduate degree, as it requires more independent work and self-motivation. It also has a clear focus on in-depth analysis and the problematization of knowledge. You learn to use your theoretical and methodological skills as tools to identify, structure, and analyze economic problems. This degree program also provides you with insights into and in-depth knowledge of how companies and organizations develop and use their innovation capacity in global competition.
The third semester provides you with the opportunity to specialize in an area of your choice. You can choose from courses offered at Södertörn University, or at other universities in Sweden and abroad. The fourth semester focuses on writing your dissertation.

Career Opportunities
Analysis and problem-solving in the public or private sectors
Economists work in both the public and private sectors. In the private sector, this could include banks, insurance companies, consultancies, and businesses. In the public sector, economists are needed at central banks, ministries of finance, and think tanks as well as in local government. Non-governmental organizations and charities also employ economists.
After graduating you will be able to provide specialist economic advice in many different settings. Thanks to your understanding of economic relationships, you will be able to contribute to economic decision-making, analyzing data and statistics, forecasting, or policy-making, among many other things. This could be done in fields as varied as poverty reduction, environmental advocacy, accounting, and investor relations.
