Take your education career to the next level
The MEd in Creative Education will enable you to develop the confidence to design, deliver and evaluate innovative creative education that is informed by a critical understanding of competing conceptual and policy perspectives. This will involve an exploration of new and emerging forms of creative education. A significant part of the MEd course will be delivered online.
The launch of the MEd draws on four years of experience within the RCA of delivering an internal PG Cert in Creative Education programme that has supported over 100 students to review and renew their creative education practice. In recent years, this programme has received outstanding student feedback, with over 92% student satisfaction across the past two years.
The information on this page is still subject to validation, with a final version of the programme being available in early 2023, when the MEd will also open for applications. In the meantime, if you would like to be contacted once the MEd is open, please complete our enquire to study form.
Please refer to the programme webpage for the most accurate and up-to-date information about the programme, its structure, modules and any updates or changes.
Students from over 70 countries come to the RCA. We welcome applications from talented, creative individuals from all over the world. Many are from backgrounds you might expect such as art, design, architecture, communications, media and humanities. Others come from disciplines as broad as engineering, social sciences, technology, toolmaking, medicine, business, law, physics, life coaching, economics, teaching, music, etc. The list is endless. What RCA students share is the potential, commitment and ambition to make change in the world through art and design.
The MEd Creative Education at the RCA brings together people, ideas and disciplines in a community that experiments with learning as much as teaching, helping you design and deliver education in formal and informal contexts. You engage with themes such as curriculum design, the pedagogies of making, and education for change, reflecting on your own values, perspectives and experiences as a creative educator. Through action research and independent study, you develop a research project that puts your pedagogical principles into practice, gaining confidence in translating theory into real-world educational design.
Programme structure
Term 1
In term 1, you take Foundations of Learning, which explores the ideas and debates around creative education, reflecting on your own experiences, values, and how they connect to broader theory.
You also take Experiments in Learning: Proposal, where you develop a project plan and ethics application for your own research in education practice.
Term 2
In term 2, you take Designs for Learning, which investigates how to design inclusive creative education methods across different learning environments (e.g. campus-based, blended or online).
You also take Experiments in Learning: Project. You conduct, analyse and present a self-directed action research project, reflecting directly on your own educational practice.
Term 3
In term 3, you take Independent Research Project: Proposal and Project, where you bring together your learning to develop and realise a major research project in creative education, grounded in your pedagogical principles.
Electives
Throughout the year, you choose two college-wide elective units. These may include Education for Change (focused on transformative education) and Making Pedagogies (exploring educational practices through making).
The Royal College of Art is the world’s leading postgraduate art and design university, providing students with unrivalled opportunities to develop their practice, build their networks, enhance their career and to deliver art and design projects that transform the world.
For 12 consecutive years, the RCA has been ranked as the world’s number 1 art & design university in the QS World University subject rankings (2015-2026) - attracting artists, designers and communicators from across the globe.
By the end of the programme, you should be able to:
- Define your values as a creative educator in relation to competing critical, conceptual and policy perspectives
- Critically evaluate your pedagogical strategies using the principles and methods of educational research
- Critically reflect on the public impact of your practice as a creative educator, and on their responsibilities as a practitioner
- Demonstrate how to translate your pedagogical principles into the design and delivery of effective creative education
- Develop strategies for working with others across a range of diverse national and international learning environments.
This programme is subject to validation.

What types of jobs to graduates go on to?
The RCA has consistently produced world leaders in the fields of creative endeavour – acting as a launchpad for the careers of major international figures.
Our alumni shape the world – whether founding their own studios and brands, pushing the boundaries of possibility through their start-ups or taking on impressive roles with global companies across a wide range of disciplines.
What if they want to start their own business?
Our creative students have ambitions of being their own boss and making their own decisions, so launch their own enterprises or studios either soon after graduating or any some time employed in industry. Many did not intend to start their studies considering themselves entrepreneurs but discovered an idea during their studies with their fellow students that they believe would make a successful business. InnovationRCA – the College’s centre for student and graduate enterprise and entrepreneurship – supports students and recent graduates to transform compelling ideas into successful businesses, providing incubation, intellectual property and commercialisation support.
