Innovation through synergy between creativity, science and technology to create value for society.
The MA/ MSc Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) programme is a unique double Master’s Programme that has been run jointly with Imperial College London for 40 years.
The programme aims to create a new type of innovator, one who will be a global leader in the integration of design, engineering, science and enterprise, and distinctively positioned to tackle the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous challenges society and the planet face. IDE is about transformation: the transformation of the individual into a fiercely curious, open-minded, empathic, analytical and motivated individual who can lead teams to produce transformative results; transformation of the practices that transcend disciplinary boundaries through the utilisation of highly creative, practical and iterative processes; and transformation of the understanding of how past, present and future contextual factors can help identify issues and opportunities as a basis for generating outputs that will create lasting impact for humanity and the planet.
We foster a collaborative approach involving transdisciplinary teamwork and encourage collaboration with industry and a wide range of stakeholders in innovation ecosystems. IDE is also about nurturing a supportive, empathic culture – the IDE family – not only while you study, but through our extensive alumni network.
Meet the RCA
We host a range of online and on-campus open days as well as recruitment events in cities around the world. These events can include 1-to-1 meetings and portfolio advice, informal chats, presentations and sessions with staff, students and alumni.
Check the Check the RCA event webpage for details of upcoming events including events in India and the USA.
The MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) at the RCA, run jointly with Imperial College London, is a two-year, 360-credit double Master’s programme combining design, engineering, science and enterprise. IDE is about the transformation of disciplines, of understanding future challenges, and of you as a creative leader. You will design through experimentation and collaboration, prototyping and validating ideas, working in transdisciplinary teams across industry and academia. The programme nurtures a supportive, empathic culture “the IDE family” while preparing you to tackle complex societal and environmental problems. Through rigorous technical training and conceptual development, you will emerge as a curious, analytical and open-minded innovator. Graduates from IDE have worked on everything from biomaterials to medical devices, inclusive interaction to sustainable systems.
Programme structure
Phase 1 (Terms 1 & 2)
In phase 1, you take IDE Fundamentals, Transdisciplinary Practices, Cyber Physical Systems, Regenerative Materials, Structures & Aesthetics, and Impact. These units each involve a design-led project (sometimes with set briefs, sometimes self-initiated), where you generate imaginative ideas, build and test prototypes, simulate, and get feedback from expert stakeholders like engineers, designers and potential users.
Phase 2 (Terms 3 & 4)
In phase 2, you take Sustainable Systems and Agency & Implementation. This phase focuses on professional consolidation, developing your individual and team identity, engaging with organisations, planning your own projects, and defining your pathway for the next phase.
Phase 3 (Terms 5 & 6)
In phase 3, you lead significant projects through team-based work, individual projects, and an elective module. You build leadership, technical and professional agency, and carve out a specialism aligned with your emerging interests under the guidance of tutors.
The Royal College of Art is the world’s leading postgraduate art and design university, providing students with unrivalled opportunities to develop their practice, build their networks, enhance their career and to deliver art and design projects that transform the world.

Students from over 70 countries come to the RCA. We welcome applications from talented, creative individuals from all over the world. Many are from backgrounds you might expect such as art, design, architecture, communications, media and humanities. Others come from disciplines as broad as engineering, social sciences, technology, toolmaking, medicine, business, law, physics, life coaching, economics, teaching, music, etc. The list is endless. What RCA students share is the potential, commitment and ambition to make change in the world through art and design.
What types of jobs to graduates go on to?
The RCA has consistently produced world leaders in the fields of creative endeavour – acting as a launchpad for the careers of major international figures.
Our alumni shape the world – whether founding their own studios and brands, pushing the boundaries of possibility through their start-ups or taking on impressive roles with global companies across a wide range of disciplines.
What if they want to start their own business?
Our creative students have ambitions of being their own boss and making their own decisions, so launch their own enterprises or studios either soon after graduating or any some time employed in industry. Many did not intend to start their studies considering themselves entrepreneurs but discovered an idea during their studies with their fellow students that they believe would make a successful business. InnovationRCA – the College’s centre for student and graduate enterprise and entrepreneurship – supports students and recent graduates to transform compelling ideas into successful businesses, providing incubation, intellectual property and commercialisation support.
