Why study Economics and Business Economics in Nijmegen?
Economics Plus
Within the Economics and Business Economics programme we look at economic choices, organisational issues and societal challenges from multiple perspectives. We recognise that every contemporary social issue has an economic aspect, but also that this is never the only aspect. In order to understand the full picture and the consequences of (economic) choices, we also use insights from psychology, sociology, law and business administration. We call this broad orientation Economics Plus.
During your studies you will learn to think critically and rigorously. You will develop an analytical perspective and be capable of analysing, understanding, and predicting complex economic situations and choices. Most students will continue their studies for a Master's degree. Graduates quickly find employment. They end up for example at consulting firms, in banking, at insurance companies, and governmental organisations.

During the first year you will explore the field of economics. You learn how the scientific field is related to real-world cases and get acquainted with different research methods. From the second year on you will deepen your knowledge through your chosen specialisation: Accounting, Finance or International Economics & Policy.
Curriculum
Curriculum year 1
During the first year, you will explore the content of the field of Economics and Business Economics. You will learn how the scientific field is related to the real world and you will get acquainted with research methods. At the end of the first year, you will conduct your own research project with fellow students related to societal issues in economics and business economics. During this project you will combine the theoretical knowledge of the first year with practical insights.
Curriculum year 2
In the second year, students who started in Dutch join the English-taught track, so all students continue together in English. From this point, you choose one of three specialisations: Accounting, Finance, or International Economics & Policy. Alongside your specialisation, you also take common courses such as Corporate Finance, International Economics and Applied Methods 2.
This way, you deepen your expertise in your chosen track while keeping a broad perspective on economics and business.
Curriculum year 3
In the third year you will follow courses of your chosen specialisation along with a reflective course on the role of economists and business economists in society and the ethical dimensions of the knowledge you gathered in the Bachelor’s. During your third year, you have the opportunity to choose electives, go abroad or do an internship.
The third year will conclude with a bachelor’s thesis. You will write your thesis (an elaborate paper) about a relevant subject you like. You may want to write about a theme related to your desired specialisation.
