The BSc in Process Engineering at Politecnico di Milano is an international programme designed to train engineers capable of managing and transforming industrial processes with a focus on digitalisation, sustainability, and system-wide innovation.
Students will build a solid foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and engineering, while developing specialised knowledge in areas such as modelling and simulation, advanced automation, process control, and mechatronics. The programme also introduces students to data analytics, artificial intelligence, decision-making and digital twin technologies, which are increasingly shaping the future of industrial systems and production processes.
The course structure promotes a synergic and interdisciplinary approach, combining theory with practice through project-based learning, labs, industrial-scale pilots and collaborations with industry.
Entirely taught in English and located in Cremona, the programme connects academic excellence with real-world relevance — preparing future engineers to design and optimise safe, efficient and digitally integrated industrial processes.
Structure
The BSc in Process Engineering is organised over three years, divided into semesters, each characterised by a balanced and continuous learning experience.
Students begin by building a strong foundation in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computer science, together with introductory engineering subjects.
As they progress, they are introduced to core topics in industrial and information engineering, such as automation, materials, management, and production systems.
To support the learning of basic sciences, the programme includes Engineering Corners — interdisciplinary lab activities offered in the earlier semesters, designed to consolidate fundamental knowledge and develop familiarity with digital tools and modelling techniques.
In the final year, students deepen their understanding of plant design, sustainable and circular engineering, and the digitalisation of industrial processes. This includes specialised topics such as model identification, data analysis, digital twin development, and process simulation — key tools in the transformation of modern industry. Students also choose elective courses to personalise their learning path.
The programme culminates in a Capstone Project, which may include an internship, project work, or collaborative initiative with industry research institutions.
Politecnico di Milano is one of the top universities in Milan, Italy.
It is ranked #98 in QS World University Rankings 2026.
Graduates of the BSc in Process Engineering will be equipped with a broad and versatile skill set, enabling them to contribute to a wide range of industrial and technological sectors.
They will be prepared for roles in production systems, process design and control, industrial automation, quality and safety management, and sustainability-driven innovation. Their skills will be valuable in industries such as chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, energy and environmental engineering, food engineering and production, and materials processing.
The strong focus on digitalisation, data-driven approaches, and systems thinking makes graduates particularly suited for innovation-oriented companies operating across traditional and emerging industrial domains.
At the same time, the programme provides a solid academic foundation for pursuing graduate studies in fields such as Chemical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Automation and Control, Agriculture Engineering, Food Engineering, or Industrial Management, both at Politecnico di Milano and at other top institutions in Italy and abroad.
