The BSc in Engineering Science at Politecnico di Milano is designed for future engineers with a broad mindset, strong scientific and technical reasoning, and the ambition to make a meaningful impact.
Positioned at the intersection of traditional engineering disciplines, the programme fosters scientific and engineering breadth and is rooted in the belief that the development of innovative solutions requires early interdisciplinary thinking and action.
From day one, you’ll engage with the fundamental principles and cross-cutting concepts that underpin all fields of engineering, building a strong and versatile foundation. This approach allows you to develop a broad engineering mindset before gradually focusing your academic path and ensures the flexibility to make informed career choices as your interests and strengths evolve.
Structure
Core Area (Core)
A common area that integrates fundamental sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry and materials, and computer science) with engineering through an original and innovative approach. This integration creates a coherent connection between the scientific principles needed to understand and describe physical phenomena and the cross-disciplinary methodological-operational tools required to identify and formulate efficient, innovative solutions to complex engineering problems, always with an awareness of social and economic contexts, as well as professional and ethical responsibilities.
Core Modules are offered in the first two years and cover subjects such as Mathematics (with Engineering Corners), Computer Science, Mechanical Physics and Engineering, Thermal Physics and Engineering, Fundamental and Applied Electromagnetism, Chemistry and Materials Science, Machine Learning, and Management.
Direction Area (Direction)
An area offering a first set of elective courses that guide you toward one or more disciplinary directions in view of your choice of the focus area.
Direction Modules are offered after the Core Area and cover subjects such as Solid and Structural Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics, Automation and Control Systems, and Electronics.
Focus Area (Focus)
A disciplinary or thematic in-depth area, where a selected range of third-year elective courses is offered among the full spectrum of the existing engineering curricula, enabling you to progressively deepen your knowledge in the engineering field that best aligns with your personal interests and goals.
Final Project (Capstone)
A final hands-on interdisciplinary project, often in collaboration with industry or research labs, aimed at consolidating and integrating the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the programme and applying them to tackle real-world problems.
Politecnico di Milano is one of the top universities in Milan, Italy.
It is ranked #98 in QS World University Rankings 2026.
Graduates of the BSc in Engineering Science are equipped with a strong scientific background and command of engineering fundamentals, including analytical, computational, experimental, and design capabilities, all within an interdisciplinary framework. They also develop communication and interpersonal skills—such as teamwork and intercultural competence—through continuous interaction with an international and culturally diverse student cohort. These are qualities increasingly sought after in today’s rapidly evolving job market.
Thanks to their broad-based training and flexibility, graduates are well prepared to pursue a wide range of career paths in industry, consultancy, and innovation-driven environments. Their profile makes them particularly suited for roles at the intersection of different engineering domains, where the ability to integrate diverse perspectives is key to tackling complex technological and societal challenges.
They may also choose to continue their studies with a master’s degree in various engineering areas or in emerging interdisciplinary fields. Depending on the chosen area of focus, the BSc in Engineering Science enables you to apply for admission to the wide range of English-taught MSc programmes at Politecnico di Milano.
Whether they join a multinational company, a high-tech start-up, or an international organisation, Engineering Science graduates bring with them a distinctive mindset—combining scientific rigour, technical versatility, and a forward-looking approach to engineering challenges.
