Key Summary

About: The BA (Honours) in Language Studies at The Open University is a flexible distance degree in two modern languages (French, German, Spanish) or one plus English. You’ll study language structure and intercultural communication, reaching CEFR C1 in one language. Study is full-time 3–4 years, part-time 6 years, with a 16-year limit. Online modules and tutorials build communication, research and ICT skills.

Career Outcomes: Graduates can work in teaching, translation, interpreting, diplomacy, media, tourism and international organisations or client-facing roles in business and public services sector. Employers value communication, analysis, research and cultural awareness; some careers may need further training.

This flexible degree allows you to study two modern languages – French, German and Spanish – or to combine one of them with English. Learning a language and how languages work (including English) opens doors to other cultures and communities and gives you an experience of the world that goes deeper than the average tourist trip. It can also provide a key to the global workplace. By the end of your studies, you’ll understand how language is structured and used in different contexts and be an effective and culturally aware communicator – attributes that are increasingly valuable in today’s global environment.
