Key Summary
A Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at OSU allows students to specialize in a wide variety of relevant technical topics. Our engineers are key professionals in the invention, design, and manufacture of devices, vehicles, machines, and systems that meet the changing needs of our society.
MAE Ph.D. students can be admitted either with an MS degree (60 credit hours) or as direct to Ph.D. students (90 credit hours beyond the BS degree). Additionally, the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UMAS) Concentration is available for students entering with an MS degree who want to focus on Unmanned Aerial Systems research.

Ph.D. (90 credit hours beyond BS)
- 48-54 hours of graduate coursework
- 30-36 hours of MAE 6000
- 6 hours of MAE 6010
Ph.D. with UMAS concentration (60 credit hours beyond MS)
- 12 hours of UMAS core courses
- 9 hours of MAE courses
- 9 hours of elective courses
- 24 hours of MAE 6000 (requires dissertation research and defense in an area closely related to Unmanned Aerial Systems)
