Key Summary
About 70% of all technological innovations are directly or indirectly linked to materials, from electronic applications, to biotechnology or energy. Cars, planes, computers, televisions, mobile phones, sports equipment, biomedical devices (artificial valves, prostheses), among others, required the development of materials and manufacturing processes, in order to provide them with the required properties and functionalities.

The Degree in Materials Engineering (LEMat) aims at scientific-technological training in the area of Materials, with a view to pursuing studies; mobility between courses taught at NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA and other Schools; employability in services that do not require specific 2nd cycle skills.
This degree, like all FCT NOVA courses, follows a new pedagogical approach called the “FCT Curriculum Profile”. Essentially, the “FCT Curriculum Profile” reinforces the technical-scientific training given with complementary skills (soft-skills) that provide students with the tools that will influence their school performance and, in the future, their professional performance while licensed. Although technical skills are important, in the current context, and even in terms of employability, complementary skills play a leading role.
The Degree in Materials Engineering offers students the opportunity to learn about issues related to the structure, properties, production, and application of different materials.
It is intended that the Bachelor in Materials Engineering:
- Discover structure/property relationships of different classes of materials.
- Learn about materials characterization techniques.
- Use, in the proper context, characterization techniques for solving industrial problems.
- Know the main techniques of production of materials.
- Know and know how to use, in the appropriate context, the language and concepts of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Informatics necessary for the acquisition of technical skills.
- Know how to communicate effectively in an academic and professional environment.
- Know the organizational structure of companies.
First of all, the Degree in Materials Engineering offers the most suitable training for pursuing more advanced studies in the most diverse areas of Science and Engineering, with emphasis on Materials Engineering.
Training in this area was launched by NOVA School of Science and Technology | FCT NOVA, in 1981. Since then, the demand for Materials Engineers has increased significantly, as a result of highly technological training that enables Materials Engineering graduates to successfully pursue a profession.
