Introduction
The Degree in Geological Engineering (LEG) came into operation in the 2006/07 academic year in the post-Bologna version. The LEG is a 3-year study cycle, six semesters, corresponding to 180 ECTS. It is accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES) for a maximum period of 6 years (last assessment in 2017) and received the EUR-ACE® Quality Mark, awarded by the Accreditation System of the Ordem dos Engenheiros, also for 6 years (2017-2023).

Program Outcome
Geological Engineering is an Engineering specialty that applies principles, concepts and techniques of Geological Sciences in solving engineering problems involving the Earth and its functioning as a geodynamic system.
Earth Sciences and Engineering are considered in many of the most developed countries in the world to be the main domains of knowledge and fundamental for the development of Society and the well-being of Man. Raw materials, water, energy (oil, coal, natural gas, geothermal energy), civil construction and public works are indispensable for today's society. The search for and exploitation of natural resources, issues associated with adequate regional and urban planning and the resolution and mitigation of environmental problems resulting from them, are some of the essential activities of the Geological Engineer.
The Degree in Geological Engineering at NOVA School of Science and Technology |FCT NOVA, aims to prepare graduates with solid basic training in the areas of Geosciences and Engineering Sciences who, with mastery of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computing and IT, may be able to work in various applied and technological domains.

The main areas of intervention of future graduates in Geological Engineering are related to research and exploitation of natural resources, civil construction and public works, mitigation of environmental problems, sustainability and land use planning. This training area covers fields of activity and/or specialization that establish a connection, not only between other engineering specialties (civil, mining and the environment), but also between engineering and geology.
The Degree in Geological Engineering at FCT NOVA thus provides comprehensive training that allows access to different areas of expertise, to be developed in more depth in the second cycle (Master in Geological Engineering), with professional opportunities (among others) for:
