Key Summary
Attractive to both employers and universities, an A Level in maths is a highly desirable and versatile qualification. You will develop high level mathematical skills which will enable you to solve challenging problems. The main topics of study are pure maths, mechanics and statistics and these are assessed by three exam papers at the end of the two years (for AS maths, there are two exam papers at the end of the first year). At North Lindsey you will have the opportunity to sit 2 papers for AS mathematics at the end of the 1st year.
Units you will study include: Pure mathematics: Pure maths is the study of abstract problem solving. You will develop knowledge of algebra, geometry, trigonometry and vectors, as well as studing new topics like coordinate geometry, sequences and series, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation and integration. Mechanics: Here we apply pure mathematics to solve problems in kinematics, forces and Newtonβs laws. Mechanics covers a wide range of topics: you could study anything from the acceleration of a car, to pulleys, friction and connected particles.
Statistics: Here you will broaden your statistical skills from GCSE. Not only will you learn how to summarise date, but also you will be able to anaylse and question data, drawing significant conclusions. Topics include sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, statistical distributions and hypothesis testing. A key element will involve analysing a large data set and learning how statisticians scrutinise vast amounts of data. Evening Class: AS/A Level maths may be taken as an evening class. Please make this clear on your application form if you wish to take this option.
