Key Summary
About: The B.S. in Earth Science teaches you to interpret past clues to understand the present and protect the future. The program synthesizes geology, hydrology and geochemistry and emphasizes foundation in geology with environmental geoscience focus. You’ll use petrologic and petrographic equipment, X‑ray diffraction, fieldwork, hydraulic testing, groundwater and soil sampling, physical and numerical groundwater modeling, and campus monitoring wells. A minor in Earth Science is available.
Career Outcomes: Graduates move into roles such as Geologist, Hydrologist, Environmental Scientist, Environmental Lawyer, Geotechnical Engineer, Geochemist, Geophysicist, Meteorologist, Seismologist, Oceanographer, Paleontologist, Volcanologist and related positions in consulting, research, environmental policy and remediation.
The B.S. in Earth Science teaches students how to interpret clues from the past to understand the present and protect the future. The program uses an integrated approach to the study of problems of the Earth’s environment through a synthesis of geology, hydrology, and geochemistry. The program emphasizes a solid foundation in geology with opportunities to focus on environmental geosciences.
Program Benefits
Through the B.S. in Earth Science, students have access to equipment for petrologic, petrographic, and X-ray diffraction analysis; groundwater modeling by physical, field and numerical methods; and field studies involving hydraulic testing and groundwater and soil sampling, including campus monitoring wells.
