Key Summary

About: The National Theater Institute's Advanced Playwriting semester gives student and early-career artists playwriting training at Eugene O'Neill Theater Center. Under master teachers and playwrights, you'll learn craft, development and the business of producing work through weekly new-play writing and ensemble readings. Integrated NTI Semester workshops and masterclasses broaden theatre skills. You finish with a portfolio of new plays and contacts, and 16 credit hours, offered in the spring semester.

Career Outcomes: Graduates can pursue roles as playwrights, scriptwriters, dramaturgs, literary managers, theatre producers, or development officers. The programme supports paths in new-play development, ensemble collaboration, teaching, and arts administration.

Advanced semesters provide student and early-career artists the opportunity to hone their craft and create a solid body of work with the guidance and tutelage of master teachers.

Advanced Playwrights expand their craft and refine their voice at the home of new play development. Under the guidance of some of America’s best contemporary playwrights, you learn the process and craft of playwriting as well as the business of producing your own work. Advanced Playwrights write new plays every week, which are given readings by fellow ensemble members. You leave with a portfolio of plays and an arsenal of contacts. Through integration with the NTI Semester, you will take various workshops and masterclasses to deepen your skills as a well-rounded theater artist. Conferring 16 credit hours, NTI-Advanced Playwriting is only offered in the spring semester.
