Delft University of Technology
Delft University of Technology’s Applied Physics Programme offers a range of elective courses, including 12 focusing on optics and photonics. Given the significance of photonics in various physics domains, you’ll have the chance to apply your knowledge to areas such as quantum devices and computing, energy and the environment, instrumentation and high tech, and health and life sciences. Our System Engineering course is aimed at preparing you for the challenges of the engineering field. The programme culminates in a master project (45 EC), allowing for a practical application of the courses you’ve completed.
Eindhoven University of Technology
Eindhoven University of Technology offers the MPOP in two programmes (depending on your background) — the Master Programme in Applied Physics, track ‘Nano, Quantum, and Photonics,’ or the Master Programme in Electrical Engineering.
University of Twente
University Of Twente’s Applied Physics Programme has many world-class researchers who will also be your lecturers during your Master's. The programme is directly connected to the research activities in Quantum optics, laser physics, bio-photonics and the fabrication of world-renowned integrated photonics on the Silicon-Nitride and silicon on insulator platforms. You will have the opportunity to tailor your programme to suit your individual interests and personal ambitions.
Students planning to study in the Netherlands should arrange accommodation before arrival due to legal requirements for a valid Dutch address, which is essential for obtaining a BSN and opening a bank account. Securing housing across the country can be challenging due to shortages. It’s advisable not to travel without pre-arranged housing. Many universities offer assistance in finding accommodation, but it’s crucial to prioritize early arrangements as housing cannot be guaranteed for everyone.

When planning your move to the Netherlands for studies, there are key aspects regarding immigration, opening a bank account, and getting insurance that you should be aware of:
Visa and Residence Permit:
- Most non-EU students staying in the Netherlands for over 90 days require an entry visa (MVV) and/or residence permit (VVR).
- The university will handle the application process on your behalf, taking about 4 weeks for a residence permit and an additional 2 weeks if a visa is needed.
- Check if you need these permits based on your nationality via the Nuffic website.
- Some non-EU/EEA students may need to undergo a tuberculosis test as part of residence permit formalities.
Opening a Dutch Bank Account:
- Advisable for managing transactions, including accommodation, insurance, and bills through internet banking.
- Needed for refunding guarantee fees and living expenses for students from outside Europe.
- Facilitates easy deposits and withdrawals, including transactions with your home country.
Registering at City Hall:
- All international students staying in Eindhoven for over four months must register at city hall.
Insurance:
- Health and liability insurance are mandatory in the Netherlands.
- Arrange insurance before leaving your home country or immediately upon arrival in the Netherlands to ensure compliance.
Being informed and taking necessary steps in these areas will contribute to a smoother and well-prepared experience during your studies in the Netherlands.
"MPOP-programme offers me exactly what I need: a way to connect with companies and people in the field during my studies. You cannot really get this from university courses alone. Career opportunities are a big reason why I chose to study in the Netherlands. The country is doing a lot in the fields of Optics and Photonics. You meet like-minded people, and it's not all work: it's also a good way to hang out with them. It's a big help that the programme can -under certain conditions- provide a relocation contribution of up to euro 2,000,- for international students."

1st-year student MPOP
"Optics and photonics technologies have so many applications! They are used in almost all high-tech products nowadays. During your studies, you will be able to work with all kinds of high-tech equipment in a very practical way. That's really exciting! You get a lot of benefits such as suiting internships, fun events and help to build a professional network. You only have to participate!"
Jan van den Bos
1st-year student MPOP
"I have worked at ASML in the system integration department. To me, the illumination, projection, and optical sensing systems are most fascinating. The technology is so incredibly complex it's almost like magic. I want to understand this "magic". And see where it can be used further to help make the world a better place!"
