Introduction

Public health is a dynamic field that aims to prevent disease and improve the health of individuals, communities, and global populations. The public health major includes the core components of the discipline including epidemiology, social determinants of health, health behavior, biostatistics, program planning, and health policy. Public health students develop and sharpen key analytical, communication, and leadership skills needed to improve health outcomes. Throughout the program, students are provided opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills through service and internship. The public health major prepares students to work in public health, clinical healthcare, health policy and administration, and law.

Academic Opportunities

Public Health Lab
Moravian University’s Public Health Lab focuses on public health scholarly work that aims to examine the social determinants of health and advance health equity. Students have participated in public health research including collaborations with community partners, data collection, quantitative and qualitative analysis, and dissemination of findings.

Research
Public health majors are strongly encouraged to undertake an Honors Project, a SOAR Research Project, or an independent study course to further develop competencies and learn valuable skills in the public health field.

Study Abroad
Sophomore year is the perfect time for an optional short-term study abroad opportunity, or, as Moravian likes to call it, a “Global Greyhound Trip.” The Elevate experience includes a trip to one of our featured destinations—the Czech Republic or Costa Rica—at no extra cost to students!

Internships
Students are encouraged to complete one to three internships with public health organizations such as hospitals, health departments, public health labs, and community-based organizations. Elevator pitch, public speaking, community engagement, resume writing, and interview skills are developed and evaluated.
