Introduction
This Master’s degree programme consists solely of a 12-month research project. With several years of senior marine navigation experience, you will already have the skills, knowledge, and expertise to undertake this stand-alone independent, workplace-based project.
You will be encouraged to discover your own research subject for investigation; whether that’s researching new technologies, investigating sustainable operations, or reviewing the science behind the day-to-day navigation strategies. Whatever you decide, we recommend your project be aligned with your aspirations in your current or chosen field of work.
During the 12 months, you will plan, execute, and report on your chosen project. Following successful completion you will graduate and be awarded the MSc Advanced Navigation for Professionals by the University of Plymouth.

Program delivery
Our programme delivery has been designed with the working professional in mind. Whether working at sea or ashore, our Total Learning Package (TLP) allows you to study an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, awarded by the University of Plymouth, regardless of your global location.
The TLP allows you to download your course materials so you can study on or offline at a pace that suits you. There are no live lectures, which allows you to balance your career and other life commitments whilst pursuing your distance learning degree. This is a huge advantage for many students.
