Michigan Technological University (MTU), located in Houghton, Michigan, was founded in 1885 as the Michigan Mining School to train mining engineers for the local copper industry. Seaman Mineral Museum, located on campus, is the official mineral museum of the state of Michigan and houses over 36,000 specimens, many from the Lake Superior region.
