The new, licensing-compliant Master's program "Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy" (M.Sc.) prepares students for responsible, independent, and comprehensive work in psychotherapeutic care in accordance with the requirements of the Psychotherapists Act (Section 7 PsychThG), paying particular attention to aspects of patient safety and the needs of people of all ages, including those with disabilities.
The master's program provides the necessary knowledge and personal, professional-methodological, social, and implementation-oriented skills based on the currently recognized state of the art in psychotherapy science and all its related scientific disciplines. At the same time, it enables students to participate in the further development of psychotherapeutic procedures and to pursue their own independent professional development, while also developing organizational and leadership skills.
The master's program includes all the content prescribed in the Licensing Regulations for Psychotherapists (PsychTh-ApprO) of March 4, 2020 (Federal Law Gazette 2020, Part 1 No. 11, pp. 448-483) as a prerequisite for admission to the licensing examination in the master's program. In addition, the Medizinische Hochschule Brandenburg has established its own specific focus areas. For example, it is distinguished by having a professorship in clinical psychology in each of the three guideline procedures: psychoanalysis, behavioral therapy, and systemic psychotherapy. The three procedures are thus equally represented in teaching.
Clinical relevance
The course content is addressed in small groups using modern, interactive teaching and learning methods, particularly "problem-oriented learning" (POL), which promotes structured information and opinion exchange as well as self-directed, intrinsically motivated knowledge acquisition. This case-based approach promotes independent and self-directed learning among students and ensures better understanding and retention of learning content.
The core of the new, licensing-compliant master's program is the extensive so-called professional internships, whose case-specific documentation is also subject to the licensing examination. For this purpose, the MHB has secured three partner clinics: the Ruppiner Kliniken, the Rüdersdorf Clinic, and the salus clinic Lindow, and established a university outpatient clinic where students in the second and third semesters are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of patients in inpatient and outpatient settings under supervision, three days a week. Here, master's students also have the opportunity to collect data for their final master's thesis.
With this combination of theory and application, which has existed since the founding of the MHB , the Master's program in Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy offers a course of study that is maximally oriented towards practice, patients and future professional activity.
Quality of teaching
The quality of teaching and study conditions at universities is generally difficult to measure. However, a good indicator is the so-called student-teacher ratio, which reflects the number of students per professor. The national average is 1:65, with significant regional variations. Thuringia leads the federal states with a ratio of 1:43, while North Rhine-Westphalia brings up the rear with a ratio of 1:90. With a ratio of 1:14, the MHB offers an outstanding student-teacher ratio nationwide, which also speaks to the excellent quality of teaching and study conditions!
State recognition and accreditation
- On July 8, 2014, the MHB officially recognized by the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture as a university on an equal footing.
- The psychology degrees "Bachelor of Science" and "Master of Science" from the MHB are therefore legally equivalent to those of any other German university.
- The recognition and approval process for the new, approval-compliant Bachelor and Master courses has been completed. Our courses are state-approved and approved by the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture of the State of Brandenburg (MWFK).
- The Ministry for Social Affairs, Health, Integration and Consumer Protection of the State of Brandenburg (MSGIV) has also confirmed to us that with the successful completion of our courses, the professional requirements according to the Psychotherapists Act of November 15, 2019 and the Approval Ordinance for Psychotherapists of March 4, 2020 are met is.
- The existing Master's program is accredited, the new, licensing-compliant Master's program is currently still in the accreditation process.
