Introduction
Where Engineering Meets Medicine
Biomedical engineering combines the study of basic sciences, mathematics, and engineering with the life sciences to understand, analyze, and design physiological and medical systems. Some of the most well-known examples of biomedical engineering developments are magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computer-assisted tomography (CAT), ultrasonic imaging scanners, kidney dialysis units, pacemakers, heart valves, and vascular grafts.
At Mercer, our biomedical engineers are trained to:
- Find solutions to diverse medical problems
- Contribute to improved healthcare
- Analyze human and prosthetic performance in clinical environments
- Design new therapeutic and diagnostic instruments that permit treatment and visualization of internal organs
- Develop new materials and devices to supplant or augment diseased or malfunctioning organs and systems

About the Major
Mercer’s Biomedical Engineering major includes four core areas: Biomechanics, Biofluids, Bioinstrumentation, and Tissue and Cell Engineering.
Additionally, students can select from 2 curricular paths:
- The traditional path emphasizes mathematics and engineering.
- The pre-medical/science path emphasizes the sciences and meets the pre-requisite course requirements for medical schools.
Program Requirements
Students on both the traditional path and the pre-medical/science path are required to take the introductory class in each of the four core areas and take an advanced class in 2 of the four core areas.
Traditional path
- General Education: 32 hours
- Engineering Core: 45 hours
- Additional Mathematics: 3 hours
- Additional Science: 16 hours
- Required Biomedical Engineering (BME) Courses: 24 hours
- Technical Electives: 9 hours
