Introduction
Management in a time of rapid change requires skills for identifying opportunities and acting on them quickly. Entrepreneurship and constant innovation is therefore not only expected in the 21st century, but also required and should be viewed as the new literacy. The Entrepreneurship and Innovation concentration at Menlo College is focused on developing studentsโ professional skills for some of the most exciting career paths on the market, including:
- starting new ventures
- heading innovation programs at large firms or public organizations
- driving social and environmental changes
- investing in tech companies
The Entrepreneurship and Innovation concentration includes 7 courses (21 units) and an internship. The concentration requires only four courses (Management for Entrepreneurship and Innovation; Design Thinking; Entrepreneurial Finance; Entrepreneurial Marketing) and then a wide range of electives, e.g. on Collaboration and Creativity, Social and Environmental Innovation, or How to totally transform large firms in the Age of Disruptive Innovations (ADI). The natural senior capstone following these entrepreneurship courses would be our flag ship course โLaunching a Ventureโ, where professional mentors from Silicon Valley will support you in identifying a business idea and develop your business model for your new venture.
โAs an Entrepreneurship major on campus, this class was exactly what I was looking for in terms of attaining the necessary knowledge on how to start a company. Through this class, I not only learned entrepreneurship concepts and theories, but I was also able to see these concepts play out in real life through AMAZING Guest Speakers and projects. Through taking this class I actually able to find a great internship at an amazing unicorn startup that appealed to both my need to work at a startup and my marketing double major focusโ (Menlo College student spring, 2019).
