Key Summary
Modern neuroscience is a multi-disciplinary field that includes biochemistry, molecular neurobiology, cellular neurobiology, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, neuroanatomy, neuropathology, neuroimmunology, clinical neuroscience, psychology, psychiatry and neurology. The neuroscience program aims to educate students to PhD level using a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach, preparing them for an inspiring scientific career within the field of neuroscience in academia and/or industry.
The NEUROSCIENCE program is strongly focused on the characterisation of neuronal and glial molecular mechanisms underlying brain functioning in health and disease. The clinically relevant topics involve mechanisms of acute and chronic pain, immune surveillance of the nervous system, metabolic dysfunctions of the nervous system, synaptic mechanisms of learning and memory, as well as in psychiatric and neurological diseases and the neuronal basis of cognitive functions in health and disease. The entire programme is in English and more than 50% of the students are foreigners. The programme ensures the in-depth knowledge of the broad range of techniques and methods used within the various projects through lab rotations and project discussions to increase the awareness of the available methodical spectrum possibly applicable to individual projects.
