Introduction
Healthcare technologies are the new stars in the engineering sciences. While other disciplines have almost exhausted their potential, these fields offer long-term growth and countless new opportunities thanks to interdisciplinary developments and social trends. In Innsbruck, a city with a strong history in medicine and sports, an innovative study program with a focus on medical and sports technology is unfolding.
The MCI presents an entrepreneurial, English master’s degree program that focuses on the technological aspects of medicine, health, rehabilitation, prevention, and sports. Innovative methods from digitalization, robotics and artificial intelligence enable students to master challenges in both medical technology and sports technology and allow students to choose a specialization according to their personal interests. At the time of application, students choose between specializing in Medical Technology or Sports Technology. However, all students graduate with a Master of Science in Engineering Medical & Sports Technologies, regardless of their choice of specialization.
The master’s program in Medical & Sports Technologies is an expression of Tyrol as a globally networked centre for health technology innovations. Together with our partners, we have developed this pioneering degree program to offer you a first-class education within the framework of exciting courses and extensive project work. With a top-class mix of international lecturers from university and practice, strong practical relevance, and integration of the latest developments, graduates are ideally prepared to work as specialists and managers in technology-oriented companies or to work directly in clinics, healthcare facilities, and sports associations.

Major in Medical Technology
In developed countries, medical technology is a rapidly growing market due to technological advances and an ageing society. The demand for appropriately educated, trained and experienced specialists in these fields continues to rise accordingly.
In most cases, industrially developed technologies prove to be unsuitable for use in medical care, as they neglect the complexity of the human body and other requirements for safety and effectiveness when used on patients. It is therefore crucial that a medical technology degree program considers all these aspects. The aim is not only to train engineers but rather to train graduates with specific expertise at the interface of technology and the complex anatomy and physiology of the human body, who can simultaneously ensure safety in their use on patients.
Together with its partners, MCI has combined the latest trends in medical technology, such as processor-controlled prostheses and implantable devices, with current global developments in digitalization in this degree program. In addition to the traditional content of the development, testing and approval of medical technology products, the course also focuses on recently emerging topics such as app development, virtual reality, artificial intelligence, medical robotics and personalized medicine. Additional courses in the areas of leadership, management and entrepreneurship address business topics that are useful for a potential self-employed career as well as in management positions.
