Introduction
What is the role of sport in a world facing pressing social challenges? How do we understand the possibilities and challenges of sport as a platform for social change? How do we examine and analyze sports and sports science research to find new perspectives on the role of sports? How can we look critically at the development of sport through social processes such as globalization, migration, and urbanization?
Sport Science: Sport in Society is a two-year master’s program that tackles these questions. During the program, students develop applied skills and a critical knowledge base to work with sport, leisure, and health industries as platforms for social change.
The program is tailored for those who have undergraduate experience in sports science, physical education, health science, and management. By embarking on this program, you will have the advantage of being schooled in the latest theories, while also being allowed to apply these theories and concepts to real-life projects and challenges through individual assignments and group projects.
What makes this program unique?
Located in the dynamic Öresund Region, the program is linked to Malmö's urban environment and position as a multicultural, innovative, and sustainable city. Throughout the program, Scandinavian and international contexts are used as case studies, and the program is carried out in close collaboration with industry partners such as local organizations.
The programme strives to offer an international classroom practice and brings together students from different backgrounds. This allows you to deepen your knowledge and gain an overview based on the academic backgrounds and practical experience of other students, which will allow you to work transcultural in your future profession.
The education is closely linked to the sports science research environment at Malmö University, which has a strong research environment and a prominent role in the scholarly debate on sports issues.

The program is full-time and leads to a master's degree in sports science after the student has completed course requirements for periods 1-4 below.
The program is taught in English.
The program aims for the student to develop applied skills and a critical knowledge base to work with sport, leisure, and health industries as sites for social change. Emphasis is placed on an in-depth ability to use different theories and methods for understanding, analyzing, changing, and using sport towards a sustainable and equal society.
The concept of sustainable society includes social, economic, and environmental perspectives. Furthermore, the program aims to provide local, regional, national, and international perspectives on sports, sports science, and sustainable society. Urban and innovative local environments, with associated challenges and initiatives, are used as living case studies. The students also actively contribute with experiences from different countries and sports cultures. Based on these, the students problematize the Swedish and Scandinavian sports context.
The student is allowed to develop skills and in-depth knowledge suitable for a wide range of jobs, entrepreneurship, and research in fields where sports and health are used, for example, to meet or create changes and contribute to social development. The student works for this in close dialogue with stakeholders external to the university.
In addition, the education prepares for research studies. The education is closely linked to the sports science research environment at Malmö University and its research areas, which are focused on the social sciences. Emphasis is placed on highlighting and working with the multidisciplinary nature of sports science and the position and opportunities of those with a sports science education in society.
The program consists of 120 higher education credits and contains both compulsory and optional courses. The master's program includes compulsory courses at an advanced level of 90 higher education credits, of which 90 credits in the main field, and optional courses of 30 higher education credits. The elective courses must be relevant to the master's program. Optional courses can be chosen at Malmö University as well as at other colleges and universities in consultation with the program administrator.
Teaching is based on scheduled tasks such as lectures and seminars as well as self-study. Some elements require on-campus attendance while others can be carried out remotely. In the program, we work with a wide variety of educational forms and materials, using digital communication channels.
