Key Summary
Introduction
Water treatment is inadequate in many parts of the world, and legislation concerning wastewater is constantly being tightened. Moreover, sustainability challenges us to reflect on water treatment in different ways.
Instead of focusing on end-of-pipe treatment for pollution prevention, we should shift our focus towards optimal resource utilization and enhanced water recycling. Consequently, it is obvious that novel and sustainable materials and technologies for water treatment are needed.
In this Master's program, you will learn how water can be treated not only efficiently, but also in a sustainable and economical manner. You will obtain knowledge and skills to address water-related challenges in the future.
Teaching in this Master's program is based on existing and future water treatment challenges. Novel and advanced technologies are at the core of the studies, and course contents are planned based on industrial and municipal requirements as well as the most recent scientific advancements.
The delivery of courses is blended. The program is a combination of on-campus and online studies. Some of the programโs basic courses can be completed as distance learning, but attendance is needed in some specialized courses and laboratory assignments in Mikkeli during each academic year. Students admitted to the program should prepare to attend classes on campus when needed.

Early Bird discount / First academic year
When required to pay a tuition fee, you are offered
- an Early Bird Discount of EUR 6 000
for the first academic year if confirming your place and paying the rest of the tuition fee of EUR 7 500 within 21 days from the date of having received your Certificate of Admission.
Early Bird discount is available in both Regular Admission and Early Admission.
LUT Scholarship / Second academic year
When required to pay a tuition fee, you are offered
- LUT Scholarship of EUR 6 000
for the second academic year if having completed a minimum of 60 ECTS credits of studies included in the personal study plan during the first academic year.
With LUT Scholarship the tuition fee is EUR 7 500 for the second academic year.
The required ECTS credits will be automatically checked for and they must be included on your Transcript of Records by the end of the first academic year i.e. by 31 July.
Curriculum
The Master's program in Water Technology is a two-year flexible blended learning program. The program leads to the degree of Master of Science in Technology, M.Sc. (Tech.), which is 120 ECTS credits.
Studies in this program are a combination of contact teaching on the Mikkeli campus and online teaching.
The program includes core, advanced specialization, and elective studies as well as a Master's thesis. Read more in the LUT study guide.
Core studies, 9 ECTS credits
Include an introduction course to M.Sc. studies, research methodology, and laboratory safety.
Advanced specialization studies, 46โ61 ECTS credits
Include compulsory and alternative studies:
In compulsory studies, you will learn about sustainable water use and novel water treatment technologies.
In alternative studies, you can choose from solution and electrochemistry, water analysis, solid-liquid separation, precipitation, crystallization, coagulation and flotation methods in water treatment, membrane technology, biological wastewater treatment, environmental and industrial analytics, advanced materials in adsorption and ion exchange.
Master's thesis, 30 ECTS credits
An advanced research project during the program's fourth semester. The Master's thesis is a part of the advanced specialization studies and requires approximately six months of full-time work.
Program Outcome
After graduation, you will be a competent professional in the rapidly developing, multidisciplinary area of water and the environment.
You will acquire:
- Competence in critical and relevant theories and techniques, problem-solving skills, and an ability to use knowledge, equipment, and tools independently for the design and development of practical water treatment applications
- Understanding of the best available techniques (BATs) and advanced water treatment technologies, covering conventional water purification, advanced oxidation, and various separation methods
- Knowledge of the impact of conventional and emerging aquatic pollutants on the environment and human health
- Knowledge of sustainable water treatment and water reuse as well as recovering valuable compounds from water (wastewater, seawater)
- A professional network through practical assignments with real companies throughout your studies in the program; for example, a research project can be based on a real case study provided by an industrial partner.

Career Opportunities
You will acquire practical skills and the latest information about the chemical engineering approach to water treatment.
You may find work in the chemical and process industry (users of pure water) and technology companies focusing on water purification.
You can also find jobs in municipal water treatment plants or research institutes, where you can develop new water treatment processes and technology, novel separation and purification materials, and water quality monitoring methods.
You will also obtain a firm basis to continue your studies in doctoral programs.
