Key Summary
About: The Master’s Programme in Food Processing Technology at LUT University in Finland focuses on renewing food processing and developing novel food processes. You’ll study mechanical and thermal processes, fermentation, unit operations, extraction methods, and rheology of liquids, suspensions and particulate materials. The programme teaches technologies and chemical process engineering approaches for sustainable food manufacturing and process optimisation skills.
Career Outcomes: You’ll gain practical skills for roles in the food industry, manufacturing companies, and research organisations. Typical jobs include specialist, process engineer, laboratory manager, development engineer, or positions in research institutes, and you’ll have a basis to pursue doctoral programmes.
Food is something we all need every day. Changing health and nutrition recommendations and global environmental issues set demands for the food industry to develop new, healthier foods sustainably. That requires the overall renewal of food processing.
The Master’s Programme in Food Processing Technology focuses on processing t in the renewal of the food processing industry and in the development of novel food processes.
The programme covers mechanical and thermal processes used in food processing, but also fermentation, technologies and unit processes used in food manufacturing. In this programme, you will acquire knowledge and skills in essential extraction methods, and the rheology of liquids, suspensions, and particulate materials in food processes.
In this master's programme, you will obtain sufficient scientific and technological knowledge for a career as a chemical engineer in the food processing industry or equipment manufacture. The programme also provides a good background for research at research institutes or universities.
During your studies, you will learn to create new sustainable solutions as a response to major global challenges. You will learn to create, design, and develop new technology and to work in an international team.
Teaching in this master's programme has been planned in cooperation with industry representatives, who are committed to providing real-life topics for projects and theses and offer internship positions for students.
During your studies, you will acquire:
- Knowledge of modern and future food processing technologies
- Skills in developing sustainable solutions and technologies for future sustainable food processes
- A professional network through practical assignments and teamwork on projects with industrial companies
You will acquire practical skills and the latest information about the technologies and chemical process engineering approach to food processes.
You may find employment as a specialist, process engineer, laboratory manager or development engineer in the food industry or manufacturing and technology companies focusing on food processes.
You can also find jobs in research institutes, where you can develop novel and sustainable processes and technology for future food processes.
Moreover, you will obtain a firm basis to continue your studies in doctoral programmes at the university.
The Master's Programme in Food Processing Technology is a two-year programme. The programme leads to the degree of Master of Science in Technology, M.Sc. (Tech.), which is 120 ECTS credits.
The programme includes core, advanced specialisation, and elective studies as well as a Master's thesis.
Core Studies, 10 ECTS Credits
Include introduction courses to MSc studies and food processes, laboratory safety and research methodology.
Advanced Specialisation Studies, 50–60 ECTS Credits
Include compulsory and alternative studies:
Compulsory studies include an introduction to food processing technologies, microbiology, fermentation, analysis and characterisation methods and a project work course in food processes.
Alternative studies include courses related to different unit operations, such as powder processes, mixing and solid-liquid separation, the circular economy, process simulation, modelling and wastewater treatment.
Elective Studies, Credits to Complete Degree
Include freely selected courses from any discipline at LUT.
Master's Thesis, 30 ECTS Credits
An advanced research project during the programme's fourth semester. The Master's thesis is a part of the advanced specialisation studies and requires approximately six months of full-time work.
