Programme overview
With a unique combination of perspectives from political science, social work, sociology and economics, this programme provides you with a broad range of knowledge and skills intended for the management and administration of welfare services. The courses are based on a comparative approach, highlighting differences and similarities across countries, administrative levels and policy areas, including a European Union perspective. In addition to being active researchers in their own field of expertise, our teachers have undergone educational training and make use of modern teaching and assessment techniques. We also bring practitioners into our courses and make visits to different types of agencies involved in the production of welfare services.
Programme structure
Semester 1:
- Welfare Regimes in Transition – Comparative Perspectives on Policies, Management and Reform (15 credits)
- Organisation, Leadership and Welfare Management (7.5 credits)
- Evaluation and Welfare Management (7.5 credits)
Semester 2:
- An Introduction to Public Economics (15 credits)
- Elective courses or internship (15 credits)
Semester 3:
- Courses in political science or courses in social work or courses in sociology (15 credits)
- Research Methods in the Social Sciences (15 credits)
Semester 4:
- Master’s degree thesis (30 credits)
Knowledge and skills acquired on the programme:
- In-depth knowledge of welfare regimes in different parts of the world.
- Understanding of public economics, leadership and management in relation to welfare services.
- The ability to apply techniques and methods for evaluating public and private welfare programmes.
- Advanced analytical and methodological skills.
Career prospects
The programme prepares you for advanced welfare management work in roles such as policy formulation and decision-making at the local, regional, national, European or international level. A degree in Welfare Policies and Management can also lead to employment in the private sector, such as non-governmental institutions or for-profit organisations.
