Programme overview
The Master of Arts Programme in European Studies (aka MAPES) is an interdisciplinary Master's programme with a unique perspective on Europe. The program specifically targets those who are interested in understanding Europe from a broader, humanist, point of view and who want to apply this perspective in careers related to European cultural and identity politics and Europe-wide communication. Our focus lies on culture, identity and communication, addressed with both theoretical sophistication and career pragmatism.
Academically, the programme benefits from the presence of the Centre for European Studies, a research-focused network across Lund University. The lectures are given by qualified lecturers with exemplary research and teaching records, as well as by guest speakers from both academia and industry. Thus, our programme offers a solid theoretical foundation for the study of European culture, identity and politics. Furthermore, it develops students’ practical skills through a project management course and the possibility of going on an internship.
Curriculum
Programme structure
Compulsory courses:
- The Meaning of Europe: Culture, Values and Identity (15 credits)
- Institutions and Governance in the European Union (15 credits)
- Theory and Methodology (15 credits)
- Project Management and Communication Strategies (15 credits)
- Master’s thesis (30 credits)
Elective courses:
They vary each year, but always include the possibility to do an internship. Students may also choose elective courses in other relevant fields of the humanities or social sciences.
Program Outcome
As a student on this programme, you will learn to:
- understand notions of European culture and history as well as collective identity dynamics.
- master the important features of European Union institutions and governance.
- focus on the European Union’s culture and communication policies and their related areas.

Career Opportunities
Career prospects
Our previous generations of European Studies graduates have found jobs at embassies and think-tanks. Some others have obtained relevant experience during their internships with European institutions, NGOs, research institutes and cultural organisations across the continent, both within and outside the EU. Some of the Master alumni have also chosen an academic path as doctoral students.
