The Certificate in Marine Surveying Fundamentals aims to expand the knowledge of existing and potential marine surveyors in the marine survey industry. Over 12 weeks and 6 modules, this distance learning programme will explore the human element of conducting opening meetings, dealing with obstructive and difficult clients/officers/crew, the safety of surveyors, the extent of authority and professional conduct.

- The differences between surveying a vessel in different locations and in different conditions.
- How to prepare for the different types of survey, including Classification and Statutory surveys in their various guises.
- How do surveyors ensure that the survey is safe, and that it remains safe throughout its duration?
- How to effectively survey marine engineering systems and individual components in detail, including common faults, wear, damage, and acceptable limits and actions.
- Assessing preparedness of shipboard emergency systems
- Managing interactions and expectations with the owners and repair teams/ facilities, and finding acceptable, safe and workable solutions
- How to determine the urgency of required repairs based on survey outcome, risk to the vessel and crew, and intended voyages, including recommended restrictions and temporary requirements
