Introduction

This program focuses on the design of integrated circuits and System-on-Chip in advanced semiconductor technologies. This requires a broad spectrum of knowledge and skills across many fields within engineering and science.

Modern society depends on reliable and efficient electronics supporting a wide range of application areas such as broadband communications, high-speed computing, healthcare, automotive, artificial intelligence (AI), the internet of things (IoT), and more. This means that the demand for engineers with the knowledge required to lead the design of complex integrated circuits and systems will remain high for the foreseeable future.

This program is organized by several strong divisions with excellent teaching experience and close research collaboration with many companies worldwide. It provides you with a competitive education in digital, analog, and radio-frequency (RF) integrated circuits (IC) and system-on-chip (SoC) design, combined with in-depth knowledge in signal processing, application-specific processors, embedded systems design, modern communications systems, and radio transceiver design.

Two specializations

The first year offers courses in digital and analog integrated circuits, digital systems design, digital communication, and an introduction to radio electronics. Later on, you choose between two specializations:

  • System-on-Chip, with a focus on digital System-on-Chip design and embedded systems.
  • Analogue/Digital and RF IC design, with a focus on the design of mixed analog/digital and radio-frequency integrated circuits.

Design-project courses with the latest software

Several design-project courses provide excellent opportunities for you to improve your design skills. You will be introduced to the state-of-the-art circuit and system design environments and CAD tools which are being used in the industry today. As an example, in the VLSI Design course, you will design real chips using standard CMOS technology. These chips are sent for fabrication and later measured and evaluated in a follow-up course. Only a few select universities around the world have the know-how and capability to provide such courses, and LiU is one of them.

Syllabus

Purpose

The objective of this master's program is to provide a strong and competitive education in Electronics Engineering, with emphasis on the design of integrated circuits and System-on-Chip in advanced semiconductor technologies as well as embedded systems. The motivation behind the program is the growing global demand for electronics engineers with knowledge and skills in the design of digital, analog, and Radio Frequency (RF) integrated circuits and System-on-Chip (SoC), combined with in-depth knowledge in signal processing, application-specific processors, embedded systems design, modern communications systems, and radio transceivers design. Mobile phones, the internet, PCs, and TVs, are just a few examples that constantly improve functionality, performance, and cost.

In addition, there is a growing number of concepts and technologies which will significantly improve areas such as mobile and broadband communications, healthcare, automotive, robotics, energy systems management, entertainment, consumer electronics, public safety and security, industrial applications, and much more. This indicates that there will be large industrial opportunities in the future, and also a large demand for competent engineers with the required knowledge and skills to lead the design of such complex integrated circuits and systems.
